This is my first review so here's an intro to my style. I want to keep the review short so people can read it quicker, I use bullet points. If you want to skip the details, the summary is at the bottom along with the score.  Rating system: For future reference for all of my reviews, I don't give a 1-10 rating because a game can fluctuate within .5 or so depending on when you play. Instead, I give a general A - F rating.

  • A = The game is awesome to the point of being near perfect. If you have the system to play this game, buy it. It's a must own IMO.
  • B = The game is great but has some shortcomings that hinder it from being a must buy. It's still very solid.
  • C = The game is decent enough to play if you need a game in between the better games. I'd wait for it to be lower in price first.
  • D = The game is bad. It has too many flaws or just isn't fun to play.
  • F = Never buy or play this game unless you want to see for yourself how poor it is.

*SORR: Super Mario 3D World

Reasons to like it:

  • Levels are really well done and above all fun. Overall, the levels are easily the best ever in a platform Mario game
  • Playing as Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach gives great variety to the gameplay and adds some strategy while playing solo
  • Playing with 4 people in multiplayer is much better executed in 3D World compared to the NSMB series
  • The graphics are great for the most part, the rain levels specifically are really cool looking
  • The game feels simple to the point that it's just fun and nothing else. A purely fun focused game at its core
  • The cat power up is shockingly the best power up ever in a Mario game, it's adorable and fun to use

Reasons it could be better:

  • It is really short considering it only has the story mode, for $60 it lacks content (see edit)
  • The game is simple, this is good as far as fun goes, but makes the game pretty easy, the last boss in particuler was disappointing
  • While the cat power up is great, some others were annoying to use (looking at you cherry)
  • Mario shouldn't have a Sunshine-like story but some kind of story would be nice. I felt like there was no goal
  • The exploration has been taken away, leading to shorter bursts of levels rather then a flowing experience

Overall, Super Mario 3D World is the best 3D Super Mario game since Super Mario 64. While 64 had a better setting and an actual hub area to explore, 3D World had better level design. The game is simply fun to play alone or with others and is currently an early standout for games on the Wii U. Sadly, the game lacks value and once you're done, you're actually done. You'll be done rather quickly as well since the game is a bit on the easy side. Don't get me wrong, 3D World is great but isn't a "I must have this game!" title even if you already own a Wii U.

Edit: The game does have more content then I had originally thought and this has been pointed out by literally everyone (but spurge) in the thread. All in all, the games score remains the same.

*SOR Score: B

Can't agree about the lack of content not justifying the full price. I got over 15 hours out of it without even attempting to go back and collect all the stuff I missed. I think that's plenty for a platformer.

I agree about the cat suit though. It was better than I expected

Nice review, love the formatting! Really clean, simple and epic!!! Also like the grading system as well!

I do wish that Mario hard harder bosses... Its not just that game, all their games have pretty easy bosses now that I think about it... They need to ramp that shit up! I do also disagree with the lack of content and the story part... but everything else is pretty awesome

Platformers these days should be $50 or so to begin with IMO. Yes, it's fine "for a platformer" but that shouldn't give it a pass for overall lack of extra modes and such. Just my thoughts though :)

I can't agree with this one. It took me 54 hours and 48 minutes total to 100% this game on single player. I would probably lower it to like 45 hours though since you have to beat every level with every character to 100% it. But either way, I'm not bad at Platformers and it still took a long time to finish it.

It took me about 15 hours to beat the main game. I didn't go back and look for all the green stars or do the bonus levels at the end of the game. If you do all that, I'm sure it's longer. Every person to comment has disagreed with me on that point which is fine. Everyone plays differently and I've had multiple "short" games feel long enough for me.

Nice review, it was nice simple and straight to the point!

I'm curious, did you stop playing the game after you had defeated the last boss because there is a lot of side missions to complete like collecting all the stars or stamps in each world that extends the games length. I think if you were to just to stop playing after world 8 the game would feel short but if you go and try to get all the collectibles in each level there's actually a lot to complete and the game becomes pretty long and well worth the $60 IMO.

I just got the game a week ago and I just beat the 8th world and now am starting to collect all the stars and stamps in each of the levels. I already have close to 10 hours logged into the game and can imagine that number to double once I 100% complete the game. My only complaint about this game is that it felt too easy. The difficulty level just started to get a little hard towards the very last couple of levels which was a little disappointing. I wish they did something similar to how the Mario 3D Land did it on the 3DS and add challenge levels to the already existing levels.

All in all 3D land was a blast and a must buy for Wii U owners. The graphics were surprisingly good too... for everyone always saying how weak the Wii U is the graphics in this game were AMAZING.

Edit: Just checked It was actually close to 13 hours for me to just complete the 8 worlds

Thank you :)

Yes, I decided to stop after beating the last world. I do that with most games unless the game is really fun. If the game had another mode, I'd try it but I normally don't replay the game for collectables. I'll play it again for sure eventually just not for stamps right after I beat it. I still would say the games value is low because the game isn't THAT amazing to play it again for stamps. (To me and it's my review)

I agree, 3D World is a blast for the most part while it lasts. I don't think it's a must buy, but I'd recommend it to people still. People rip on the Wii Us graphics just to do it. The Wii U is capable of amazing graphics and this will only get better in later games.

There is a secret world.  Did you even get the secret character?
