Yeah, that's exactly what I was responding to.

World of Warcraft does that? I though thought it was just a monthly subscription then you can play...

Damn that sucks lol

Yeah, most MMOs are like that; you buy the content up front with a one-month access pass, then once your 30 days are up you continue to pay your subscription. World of Warcraft, DC Universe Online, Elder Scrolls Online, Star Wars The Old Republic, Rift, Aion, the vast, vast majority of MMOs work that way, which is precisely why you've had so many shocked and sarcastic responses; you really shouldn't be surprised by the standard MMO model at this point. :)

As for the original question, FF XIV is very much worth the time and money. You don't need to have played any other FF games as it's entirely standalone, sure, you'll miss all the nice little references that make it that little bit better for long-time franchise fans, but you should still enjoy it if you're at all into fantasy RPGs, MMOs, or simply exploring massive, beautiful worlds. It has enough content to keep you going for quite a while, but you can always take a few months off and come back later when more content and features have been added, so it's not like it's a 12 month commitment. :)

I would take someone else's advice though, and pick up the PS3 version dirt cheap, then play it once (assuming you have a PS3!) to add the PS3 license to your account, then go to the Mog Station account site to upgrade (for free) to a PS4 license, as the PS4 version is more expensive than the PS3 version.

To add on to what DeadnBuried said.

The free PS4 upgrade wont last forever. You have until From Friday, April 11, 2014 at 1:00 a.m. until Wednesday, December 31 2014, users will have the option to upgrade from the PlayStation®3 version to the PlayStation®4 version free of charge.

You must play the PS3 version at least once to take advantage of this deal. You can buy the PS3 version for cheap, and then upgrade for free!

How deep is this game compared to FFXI?  I played FFXI for years on the PS3 and PC and loved it. The only reason I quit was because I got married and had a kid. Do they have sub jobs?  How fast do u level up compared to FFXI and is it easy to find a group to level?  I liked how it took forever to level and if u die u lose xp.

I went outside once, the graphics were great but the gameplay sucked!

The game, in my opinion, is utterly fantastic. A glorious return to form for Final Fantasy. I haven't been this into a Final Fantasy in years, or even an MMO for that matter. It does take a while to get going, but once you get the hang of things, find people to play with, you will have a great time. I beat the main story, and am currently taking a break from it, but I will definitely be returning soon. It's in my top 5 Final Fantasy games.

It is vastly different than FFXI. The story makes you feel involved in the world, and It really makes you feel like a hero.

You can switch classes, and jobs by simply switching your weapon or tool.

There are classes and jobs. Classes can be jack of all trades being good at most things but never excel in them. For example you can be a Gladiator with some Conjurer, Marauder, and Lancer skills.

Jobs on the other hand are specialist that defines their role in a party. Paladin excels in Tanking, White Mage for healing etc. In order to be a Paladin you need the classes, Gladiator Lv30 and Conjurer Lv15 to unlock the job Paladin.

There is lots of ways to level up. Questing, Main story missions, FATE(Full Active Time Event), Dungeons, Guildleves, Guildhest, and hunting logs.

Finding a group is simple too. There is a Party Finder tool that you can use to search for parties that is interested in doing the same content that you want to do, and there is a Duty Finder feature that randomly party you up with people from all the servers to go raiding in dungeons with.

Lastly, when you die you don't lose exp, instead your weapon, and all gear you have equipped will take damage. Your gears take damage while in combat and they take most damage by dying. They'll become useless in combat if they get broken and must be repaired by either spending gil on one of the repairing npc, or you can repair them yourself if you have the appropriate crafting class leveled.

Is it worth it? I mean the initial $39.99 then the $12.99 per month. I would gladly pay it if it is. But I haven't played a FF game before. How are the combat and classes?

I plan to get it on PS4 by the way.

Totally worth it. It doesn't matter if you never played a FF game before since they don't relate to each other except for direct sequels, like FFX and FFX-2, FFXIII, and FFXIII-2. Although, the names and the look of some monsters do stay the same throughout the series.

Visit my thread. Its full of youtube videos showing off combat, and contents. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=145816&page=1#

By the way, here is a list of all the combat classes, none combat classes, and jobs you can unlock in FFXIV.

Also this is not a final list, more classes and jobs will be unlocked with future patches and expansions. I believe Patch 2.3 will bring Ninja, and Samurai.

Combat Classes: Archers, Lancers, Conjurers, Thaumaturges, Pugilists, Gladiators, Arcanists, Marauders.

Jobs: Bard, Dragoon, White Mage, Black Mage, Monk, Paladin, Scholar, Warriors, Summoner

None Combat classes. Gatherers and Crafters

Leatherworkers

Carpenters

Botanists

Goldsmiths

Alchemists

Miners

Weavers

Armorers

Blacksmiths

Culinarians

Fishers

That sounds cool. You know anything about dragoons and black mages? And are your characters tied to one server or something?

Sounds more like a solo game compared to FFXI. After level 10 you pretty much HAD to group to level. What's the level cap and do you or anyone else experience any endgame content yet?  Trying to gauge the depth of the game. It took me over a year to get to lvl 70 in FFXI and I played a ton. I loved that.

If your referring to DC Universe ONline on PS3, I didn't pay $60 up front to play it.  The other ones I have not played.

how much time until you level one character to level 50?

With the new dailies DF, you can get it in a week or so. Depends on how much fate grinding/story quests you do. I don't think it ever feels super slow, but it's definitely long enough to feel rewarding.
