So as title says. I think with big hitters still to come ( you know the ones mk8, zelda, smash, x and countless indies etc) this is great news so far!

Thoughts? Agree? Disagree?

Source was vgcharts sales data by the way.

What numbers did you use?

Seems down YoY to me...

http://www.vgchartz.com/tools/hw_yoy.php?reg=Global&start_year=2011&end_year=2014&console=WiiU

EDIT: There is a big discrepancy between VGC's YOY graph and the weekly charts.

Weekly charts 2014 YTD: 527,334

YOY graph 2014 YTD: 451,278

Why a 76,056 diff?

Weekly charts 2014 from Week Jan 04 to Week March 22 = 451,278. YOY 2014 graph to date = 451,278.

No diff that I can see, unless I've missed something.

Weekly charts 2013 from Week Jan 05 to Week March 23 = 403,683, so yes it's up by about 48k.

(Edit) - YOY 2013 seems way off the weekly charts - 640k YoY versus 468k weekly, unless I got my math wrong?

Regardless, YOY 2013 graph cannot be used for comparison at the moment, though, because it includes another week (to 30th March). That was another 64k or so, and I don't see next week matching that, so by the end of the month I think it will be very close to even.

@ OP - My thoughts are that 50k is not much in the grand scheme of things, especially as it is all based on estimates anyway. Will just have to see whether the upcoming games will make a difference.

Sorry I meant the weekly chart shows 571,014 for 2014, and 527,334 for 2013.

Look at the totals:  http://www.vgchartz.com/weekly/41721/Global/

29 Dec 2012 2,247,216 LTD
23 Mar 2013 2,774,550 LTD = 527,334 YTD 2013

28 Dec 2013 5,358,113 LTD
22 Mar 2014 5,929,127 LTD = 571,014 YTD 2014

This must be what the OP is using to get a 50k increase YoY.

However in the YoY graph we have 451,278 YTD: http://www.vgchartz.com/tools/hw_yoy.php?reg=Global&start_year=2011&end_year=2014&console=WiiU

So this can be explained by subtracting 119,736 which is the Jan 4th 2014 total.

A 50k increase is honestly horrible... Especially when you factor in it's current game library it's built in the past year, prices, and bundles that now exist. Last year I thought the Wii U could easily sell somewhere in between GC and N64 numbers... Now I'm wondering if Nintendo can even manage to sell 20 million of these things.

Current gaming platforms - Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, New 3DS, PC

Man I predicted Wii U to sell 5 million this year, thinking I was lowballing it just to be safe, yet the Wii U is only going to have sold barely 800k after the first 6 months. That is just ridiculously bad considering all it had going for it! For my prediction to still be met now, the Wii U would have to average about 160k a week starting from Mario Kart 8's release, essentially 5x more than what the Wii U is averaging now. Needless to say, that's just not gonna happen unfortunately!

Better than nothing I guess

Xbox One, PS4 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch will sell better than Wii U Lifetime Sales by Jan 1st 2018

50K is pretty low when you are talking of a market as big as the consoles market, who got nearly 270M pieces sold last gen, it's kinda irrelevant and more likely a market fluctuation than a solid increase.

Sure, but that was across three systems and many years.

This is an increase of about 10% yoy. Not much, but far from irrelevant.

(unless ioi lowers it )

Here is the problem with Wii U

The Wii became irrelevant very quickly to the core gamers about 3 years after release as the other consoles became better for the core gamers. Sure it kind of limpered along for a couple of extra years before finally being replaced by Wii U. The failure of Wii to core gamers meant, not too many enthusiastic early adopters this time around driving up the demand and causing any kind of mass market adoption frenzy (like the Wii caused).

To make things worse, the Wii U being "watched" by those core gamers very quickly entered the irrelevant stage, especially as competing consoles from Microsoft and especially Sony really upped the game.

While Wii U goes largely ignored even as it has still more games than the other 8th gen consoles, it is the future of Wii U that makes it look bleak. The other consoles have tons of games coming and Wii U has just more Mario games.

Unless you have to play Mario games... the Wii U is irrelevant.

I want to express my doubts over the fact that you did your research concerning upcomming Wii U games before making the statement, "Wii U has just more Mario games". If you did do your reasearch, I am curious how did you draw this conclusion from the information we have available to us. If you did not do your reasearch, I would suggest you not make baseless statements.

If a 10% increase is good then 3.5 million Wii U consoles for 2014 will be good?

Baseless?

Well the only games I know of coming to Wii U this year are Mario Kart 8, Super Smash (Mario) Bros Wii U, and Bayonetta 2.

2 for 3 Mario games for the Wii U makes you the more baseless one commenting imho.

Yeah, baseless is the wrong word to use here. I should have used "based on little information" or "based on limited information".

Smash Bros is not a Mario game, by that logic I can say its a Metroid game since Samus is in it.
