Well that was surprising, didn't expect it so soon but I did predict a $50 pricecut before summer

I thought they would wait at least a month until stabbing the Titanfall buyers in the back...

They would be stabbed in the back regardless, just like anyone who buys an 8th gen system right now. Price cuts, remodels, bundles, etc. are inevitable throughout any and all system's life cycles.

If they cut the price a year after launch, I don't really consider that a stab in the back. This mere months after launch is though.

Well what you consider doesn't change that one could have gotten a better deal if they had waited. Now whether or not they get upset over it is on themselves! I certainly wont get upset if they price cut the 3DS this year, infact I'm expecting them to.

Keep in mind I say they stabbed them in the back because they dropped the price 2 weeks after a major release.  If it would have been over a month later, it wouldn't be a big deal at all considering they cot a free game.  But right now even the Titanfall bundle is $450...

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

[Prediction Made 6/18/2014]

Makes you wonder in regards to the February NPD results.

Did it really sell 258k or was it an adjustment from the lower January numbers?

If it did in fact sell 258k I don't see why they would be dropping the price. Unless they just want more marketshare?

February is in most cases a adjustment month... the January sales for Xbone was not that low like 145k... so they adjusted some in February... if I can guess I will say:

Jan: 190k
Feb: 210k

Something like that... yet loosing to PS4.

People are delusional if they don't easily read this as a desperation move. Not desperation in that they're about to cancel XB1 or anything that dramatic, but have any of you ever worked at high levels in corporations before?

I guarantee it went something like this :

Development "Look at all the good will we've achieved with the 360 generation, that gives us the ability to do pretty much any thing we want! The profits will be INFINITE!"

Reveal "Well, haters will be haters, but we will still easily be #1 .. right? We will kill Sony at E3"

E3 "Hmm, this isn't going so great, but this is just internet outrage, we'll outsell everyone easily"

Post-E3/Pre-Launch "Well crap, projections have us losing unless we adjust a little, but we will still easily win, and can put the DRM back later because used games mean we can only have 35m annual bonuses instead of 34m!"

Launch "Ah, see! We have infinite legions of dedicated Xbox brand fans that will never abandon us, and they will buy 1 billion Xboxes!'

Post New Years "Uh-oh. Sales are honestly pretty terrible. And after such a great launch! Okay, keep tracking, and get ready to make changes if things don't improve"

Late February "Well, it looks like not even Titanfall will help us keep up, so prepare the price drops!"

So there ya go. It's all a money question. At least Microsoft is prepared to sacrifice a little now to try to maintain some momentum.

Guaranteed : Microsoft will drop the price to $399 by November at the latest. Depending on how things are going, they may even bundle a brand-new game at that point, or multiple games.

Up in the air : How does Sony react to a $399 XB1? I said from the beginning that this new gen of consoles would be immensely more competitive than the past, and see faster price drops, but many IDIOTS completely discounted this obvious fact of the marketplace. There are billions of dollars in marketshare at stake, and combine that with the dramatically cheaper-to-manufacture and more standard architecture units this time around, and it spells quick price drops back and forth over time. Fall 2015 might even see :

$149 WiiU
$299 PS4 1TB Bundle
$299 XB1 1TB Bundle

And by 2016 $199 might even be doable. With post-28nm revisions of the processors, and SoC consolidations, it might not be a question of if, but when, that occurs.

This isn't like 2005-2006 PS360, jammed full of exotic hardware that took many years to get cheaper. These are by and large components that are pretty standard mass-produced PC hardware. In fact, the more PS4 consoles sold helps MS, and vice versa in terms of adding volume to the APU production, which will make justifying a 20nm, 18nm, or other die-shrink of them, maybe even 14nm and 10nm down the line.

XB1 could be pared down to something the size of a small bluray set-top player, and PS4 the same by the late middle to end of this gen. And no more giganto box + power brick for the XB1.

Well if this becomes an official price cut it confirms to us that MS weren't satisfied with the X1's sales. Still, it's not a huge drop and MS can take the hit with little problem. The hopefully gain in market share will likely offset any loss in the long run anyway.

If they go on to sell 10 million consoles per year, at $50 less that's $500 million lost revenue per year, plus the opportunity cost of bundling the game.

Being able to take the hit thanks to deep pockets, and it being good for the XB business aren't the same.

It is a lot of lost revenue, but i'd say the loss would be smaller than the potential gain. The X1 needs to stay competitive, and a lower price is the best way to achieve that. In the long run that competitive boost would help maintain the brand, while also likely paying itself off with the revenue from extra sales resulting from the cheaper price.

I'd say it's a good move overall.

Sorry MS still not buying it, that thing should cost at least 100 less than the PS4, the hardware design and games that it current has it absolutely does not compensate the 450 price tag.

Completely ignores Kinect....

No offense but Kinect is part of the problem. I won't be buying an XBOne until it is released without Kinect.

I really think the people claiming that there needs to be a X1 without kinect/ a wii-u without the tablet controller needed to play it or a ps4 model without the lights on the controllers are just trying to come up with little reasons not to get it, If MS brings the price down to below the Ps4 and the Kinect is still in the box you can just leave it there, the system doesn't need it to power up now and you would just have it on the off chance a cool sounding game came out for it that you would consider playing.

Always better to have the option of playing all the games for the system.

I want a game system without expensive, tacked on nonsense. The XBone is less powerful than both my PC as well as the PS4 therefore I will never really use it for anything other than exclusive games. I won't pay for something that I will never use and I sure won't pay so much for a system that will, at best, be my third choice.

Awesome deal, especially with the Forza pack-in. You're essentially paying $390 for the console.

Should help catch them up in the US, assuming they are behind.

Titanfall effect is over.

Xbox One dropping momentum big time.

PS4 still sold out.

MS needs to figure out something fast. Its not the end of the world as I still think the One has been and will be successful, but NA is their stronghold and its losing ground still to PS4.

Official price cut should happen immediately and significant games need to be announced.

Can we stop saying the PS4 is sold out and there is supply issues. Here is JUST the GameStops within a 100 miles of me.

http://www.gamestop.com/Browse/StoreSearch.aspx?store=259&fromHold=true&sku=020384

Everyone of them has stock.

That isn't counting all the Walmarts and Best Buys who have stock in my area and have for 2-3 weeks now.

Psst, theres countries outside of the US.

And your point is what exactly? NA makes up a large chunk of PS4 sales as of now. They are not sold out like the poster claimed and haven't been in the US for weeks now.

That is why this nonsense of using supply issues now is stupid. I don't care if your country of 5 people don't have PS4's in stock. In the United States they are in just about every store.

In this day and age, with the Internet, ignorance is a choice! And they're still choosing Ignorance! - Dr. Filthy Frank

Microsoft is really going all-in on the Kinect. I can see why (without it the hardware is fundamentally almost identical to the PS4, just slightly weaker), but really in the end if the Kinect never pans out, they seriously crippled themselves. Kinect is needed to differentiate it, but currently it's really not too useful in actual games and it's hard to justify any extra cost for it for people that just want to use the console to game.
