Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Store slashes the price of Xbox One to $449.99 USD

Sorry MS still not buying it, that thing should cost at least 100 less than the PS4, the hardware design and games that it current has it absolutely does not compensate the 450 price tag.

You get a free game, camara, a much better mic.  I believe 450 is a decent price point in comparison of the PS4.  Wallmark lets you chose between BF4, Dead Rising and Ryse as the free game with the 450 price, including the Forza and Titanfall bundle.

My theory is that M$ is not scared at all. They are making a simple tactical move to enhance the value proposition of their product in the marketplace. They recognize that even with a very successful launch, the even much better launch of the PS4 has created enough media and internet attention has swayed the publics perception of the XB1. They are closing the gap on price to reduce that as a factor in the buying decision of the consumer. M$ knows like most everyone here that they can't concede significant market share to Sony in the US and UK. I still think they really had no plan to launch this last fall, but were forced to go to not get too far behind the PS4. I think it worked in the US and UK. They will launch in other countries this fall and see the same middling sales as in previous generations.

As far as people saying the XB1 has no value at $450? That is rather absurd at this point. Clearly, the XB1($450 - the $60 game included) with Kinect in the box at essentially the same price as the PS4 is a equal if not better value. Of course, the naysayers will exclaim that "I don't want Kinect!". Funny how the PS4 camera is such a hot seller then??? That's the same as someone saying "I don't want a funny light on my controller, so it's not worth it!". Not every feature in or on a system will be used by all or even the majority. That doesn't take away that capability or function or the technical cost of having it. Clearly, this argument comes from the sheer shock that M$ has already essentially price matched the PS4 in 4 short months.

...

@top - i think they can be both scared and tactical.  I think MS believes in the idea that late adopters purchases decision is heavily influenced but the answer to the question "what system do my friends have".  between 360 and xbone i think it shows that MS is willing to invest heavily in the early days nowing that those investments pay off not just in the short term but also the long term.

had ps4 flopped or even just did "average" i don't think MS would care about xbone's current performance.   ~4.5M at the end of march isn't too bad.  but i think MS knows that a 2.5M unit lead for ps4 at the end of march can easily turn into a 20, 50, maybe even 100M lead at the end of the generation due to bascially what you said,..  market perception.

@bottom - just remember, that while the ps4 camera as a "hot item" it is only selling to 15% of the userbase meaning 85% of the user base doesn't want it enough to play even $60 for it.  it's that 85% you hear complaining and unlike that $0.10 LED on a ps4 controller the kinect is expensive.  i mean, that LED can't be increasing the price of the console when both controllers retail for the same price.

Who really cares either way? A price drop is good for consumers no matter why it happens.

It is too early to count any console out, especially the X1 and PS4. The 360 and Ps3 sold around 70 million plus?
We are still in the 4-6 million range this gen. There is a lot of time left.

Anyway, who really cares? Unless you have stock it really shouldn't be an issue. Fact of life - exclusives exist and always will, if you really want to play all the exclusives you must buy all the sytems! No one says you have to buy them at launch, but trust me in the long run $400 and even $500 doesn't really mean anything in a 5-7 year span.

I guess unless you are one of those who bought it 4 months ago. It's cheaper and with a free game to boot.

thats the pisser

Dropping price : "oh its not desperation its just one retailer! Its not like an official drop or anything

Manufacturer drops the price on their own website, what now?

Promotion? MS more generous then Sony? I know, a crazy thought indeed.

Yeah man, Microsoft is only dropping the price out of the goodness of their heart.

lol so what? It benefits the consumer. Where as Sony rasies their prices in Canada and doesn't give away free AAA games with console purchase.

But  Sony are angels regardless right?

No Sony is just as greedy as Microsoft, but I'm not going to fool myself into thinking a billion dollar corporation is going to eat a loss just to make it's customers happy.

Well that least you know whats up with that first sentence. The corporations generousity is only as good as their marketshare isn't

man miss your rant vids lol

I am a Sony guy but why is this a desperate move?? This is a good move for me. If they go with a Xbox One then I will say they are being desperate. So far it's just business move. Making sure that PS4 doesn't take a lead they can never recover from.

Here is the thing, if you are a Sony fan, its desperation from MS, if you are a MS fan, its good times.  If you are a gamer and care little who the OEM is, then the X1 just became a lot more desirable.  I personally prefer MS to be desperate because thats when they go that extra mile to win business.  The same goes for Sony and Nintendo.

As a gamer, I care little if MS is desperate.  Sony had to do it last gen and MS has to do it this gen.  Who cares who was first and how fast.  Gamers really do not care who is desperate if the deal benifits them.  Only fanboy's care about such things as they can throw those words around during the fanboy war.

I wish Sony would come out with an Infamous bundle for 399 but I doubt that will happen.  Sony will not be dropping the PS4 price or any type of real incentive bundles because they do not have to.  As we have always seen, whoever is on top really do not have to be customer centric.

Omg, so its actually official? Is this the quickest price cut in the history of console gaming I wonder since the wiiU had a price cut around October? (The super failed consoles don't count)

SNES, N64, GCN, and 3DS all had $50-or-more price drops within 6 months of launch.

Virtual boy also had a 11% price drop (not quite $50) within two months of launch. Depending on whether you're considering this to be a $50 price drop since $450 is $50 less than $500, or a $110 price drop since they're also throwing in a $60 game for free, you could say it's similar considering 10% of $500 is $50.

Here it's more of a 90$ price cut within 4 months of launch.

plus there is no such things as desperation in business decision unless your company as a whole is threaten... But keep going it's amusing...

Microsoft as a whole is threatened by the XB1 not selling as much as PS4...Right...

Edit: Are being sarcastic? If you are this some emmy award winning writing right there.

no I'm saying there is no such thing as desperate moves in business.... unless your company is threaten... MS is not threaten even if XB1 was selling one unit a months... so this price cut is just a strategic move to compete agressively....

what I mean is a wealthy company doesn't make desperate moves ever... it just adapts its strategy to improve marketshare and net revenue on the long run, simple as that... if it is really failing with desperation they just axe it...

anyway for once customers are the beneficiary of such agressive competitiveness

but I'll take the ammy award :P

It wasn't a good decision to try to sell each console for a profit...that just doesn't work when you are the most expensive console on the market.

Even still, they should wait a little while longer and then announce a price drop, not just quietly let it happen

Wrong they sold 3 million plus units at $500 and banked that $100 premium over the PS4.  That makes it a whole hell of a lot easier to drop the price.  I said this all along the X1 at launch was a premium price, because it would basically still sell out in 2013 at that price.  So business says thats what you do.  Every single piece of electronic equipment you buy now sells at a premium at launch. Then prices change. Why not a console.

Well it likely slowed their launch momentum and sacrificed some of their total userbase which could cost them in the long run. Additionally they run the risk of angering early adopters when they lower the price so soon.

Short term, sure, its a good business decision. Long term, questionable and we will see where XBO is in a few years.

The very bottom line is that MS' decisions surrounding the XBO were very anti-consumer which has hurt their image and their momentum. Who knows where they would be if they released the console at a loss instead of a profit. I would expect that there would be a larger number on the homepage of VGC...

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.
