Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo needs new IPs now more than ever

Nintendo has had a pretty big problem with new IPs ever since the N64. Aside from a few titles like The Wonderful 101 and X, Nintendo is mostly just making sequels. Sure Mario Kart and Smash Bros will sell a lot, but it will sell to the same audience already buying the WiiU. Nintendo needs to appeal to a new crowd, like they did with the Wii by making games like Wii Sports and Wii Fit. They were able to sell to soccor moms and old people. You can't keep selling a console to the Nintendo faithfuls, it's time to attract new audiences.

Now I'm not saying Nintendo should stop making sequels to popular franchises, but they need to get their top brass (Retro and Miyamoto) working on new IPs to appeal to an entirely different audience. Double down new games. Get someone working on a racing sim to bring over the Gran Turismo/Forza crowd. Make a shooter to appeal to COD/Battlefield fans. A cinematic game for Uncharted lovers. Sandbox games for GTA/Saints Row fans. They could even create something with an M rating. Don't worry Nintendo, I won't be corrupted if I see blood or hear curse words. Maybe even an MMO. Experiment a little, try something new. Get Miyamoto away from manangement and have him start making games again!

A Skylanders type game would be a good idea. Though I have a feeling Nintendo won't embrace the Skylanders fad until after it's over.

The Wonderful 101 was a great new IP that they could easily turn into a franchise if they wanted. Yet it didn't help at all. Of course, they didn't really promote it much in NA. Something is seriously wrong with NOA's advertising department. They need to start spending some ad $$$$$$$.

And that, I think, is the Wii U's biggest problem. Not "new IPs". It's a utter lack of (for the most part) advertising of their system and their games. New IPs are great and all, but they usually don't sell consoles. Known properties tend to do that.

Sometimes experiments fail. At least they tried. Though I think W101 could have done better with a bigger marketing push.

I disagree that new IPs can't sell systems. Look at Titanfall for a recent example. It's nearly single-handedly moving Xbones.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

But in all seriousness, Nintendo should create a new mascot by themselves and not waiting around until a third party publishes exclusively for them.

I do agree they need new IPs but I doubt they are gonna make any unless they higher some new and creative developers and most importantly, give them a chance

Hi! I'm not new to VGchartz, but this is my first post.

I feel like Nintendo could use some new IPs, but I also feel like they already have too many IPs that are underutilized these days. Star Fox, F-Zero, Earthbound, Golden Sun, Custom Robo, Punch-Out!!, etc. These are all valuable IPs that haven't had new games in a while. They all also represent genres that are not necessarily too common on Nintendo platforms these days. New IPs are always important, but I don't think that should mean abandoning old ones.

Even Metroid hasn't had a release in a while now that I think about it.

At least we have gotten new Kid Icarus and Fire Emblem games recently.

WOAH, FIVE examples. Actually 3, Wii Sports Resort and Sin and Punishment weren't a new IP.
