Forums - Politics Discussion - Sweden's second largest party thinks video games are bad for students

It seems like the second largest party in Sweden, Moderaterna, the leading political party of Sweden don't look too kindly upon games. They blame gaming on poor school results, and as far as I understood it's one of the main reasons too.

"As Sweden's students underperform, the leading political party in Sweden blames video games. "It's very obvious to me that we must change the attitude surrounding this [the amount of time spent on video games]", says the party's educational policy spokesperson Tomas Tobé."

"Tobé cites that more than a third of males who are attending school are spending a total of three hours or more on video games per day, and that this is something which won't help the Swedish school results going forward."

I found this a bit amusing, since China recently dropped the video game ban here. And the ban was set in place because of exactly those reasons, but also that it would get people less active and unhealthy.

I will both agree and disagree with the Swedes. Too much gaming is of course not good, but it's the parents in my opion that should set these rules not the politicians.

Then perhaps stopping their iPad handouts to students of under-performing schools may help.

I blame mobile games.

Conservatives gonna be conservative

I guess video games was next in line for taking the blame for our imploding school system...

I know the best solution! Ban video games in Sweden!

Well its true, but its only excessive playing that is bad. They also can cause people to become more violent, and cause them to become obese and unhealthy. Plus there are so many other negative effects. Video games aren't the only thing though. The internet, smartphones etc. are all big distractions.

Not sure about the swedes, but here in Norway we get free pc's, and that makes students just go on facebook all the time, playing candy crush or whatnot. A horrible idea, while the PC is genious for schoolwork, 2/3 of class never pays attention anymore.

And if you pay attention in school you learn much more than if you do an extra hour homework, at least in my personal experience, and my average grade is 5.5 out of 6 so I should know what I'm talking about.

The prime minister is apart of the moderate party. Are you extremely bias or something?

Sweden is very communist based on the research I did on it. Look at its homeschool policy that made people actually leave the country.

Moderation. That is all.
