Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Rumor – Titanfall Gone Gold, Xbox One Version Might Get Upgraded to 1080p on Launch

Doubt it will hit 1080p. As stated by others a solid frame rate is more important to me for this title. The beta was a blast so if they maintain or surpass the beta resolution and frame rate that would be awesome.

My guess is 900p at most.

The ESRAM is the cause of the resolution. Devs complained about it with the SDK being behind on it.

The new SDK rolled out this month. And devs are now easily implementing 1080p in their games. It was because the 32 mb couldnt store the necessary data for doing 1080p. But with the new tiling technique of the data, it can take on much more. Its a realtime version of Zipping really.

Taking BS to a new level...

Well there is truth to what he's talking about. With modern games they have huge framebuffers in order to get the desired effects. The framebuffer needs to be in esram and as a result it's limited by size. A 1080p framebuffer is just naturally going to have issues fitting in there. Tiling however allows textures to have the same quality but take up a smaller amount of space. If applied here, it could help XBONE games hit larger resolutions.

But there's one major problem. XBONE games are not just limited by the esram. Otherwise the framerate would be all but locked at 60. Instead in Titanfall for example the framerate drops when the game is having to render a scene of higher complexity. This is exactly like every other video game ever made. It's because the GPU is having issues rendering the scene fast enough. ESRAM is not the only thing hurting the system's graphics.

Heck the XBONE could have 128 mb of esram, 8gb of GDDR5, and a TF of DDR4 for good measure and it still wouldn't directly affect resolution and framerate in a meaningful way on current games.

The only way I see it being 1080p is if Respawn have been able to have enough time to implement the new Tiling techniques the new SDK brought with it for the ESRAM. It rolled out at the start of the month. Considering its online only gamme a patch with this new code could be possible. But was it worth them doing it?

That's the question. It'd be nice of them to, and would show the benefit of the new SDK early.

Why would tiling techniques increase the resolution?

It's not a realtime version of Zipping. It's dividing the scene into separate parts while trying to eliminate most of the double work that would have to be done at the connecting edges. Implementing an eficient tiled renderer that eliminates most of the overhead is a pain in the ass and having the proper SDK tools set it all up it for you is a huge help. However it's still slower than using a single 1080p buffer, and definitely slower than keeping a single smaller (eg 900p) buffer.

So yes they can use tiling to make it 1080p, but the performance hit will still be bigger than a non tiled buffer going from 792p to 1080p.

Cool

What will that do to the Framerate?

To bad XB1 fans can't tell the difference between 1080 and 720 such a waste for them to push for it if no one can see it.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

its just not a big deal... 720 or 1080p.   if its all about good grafics u have a pc...

u can have good games in 480p it just doesnt matter, but if u go all in on hd like sony and m$ u better have 1080p.

i dont see problem in having "just" 720p in titanfall. but if the up the res to 1080p and destroy the game with massiv framerate problems we will see m$ burn.

Ouch.  Going to need a little more than water to soothe that burn, lol.  The Xbox fans who have repeated this nonsense of not being able to tell the difference are going to start to look foolish when they are praising games that do pull off 1080p on the One.

BTW, have they even confirmed what the resolution is?  I know the last we heard was 792p (weird resolution to shoot for, really) and they were hoping to get to 900p.  I think it's time to actually confirm this, as it launches in just 2 weeks.

Well of course it does 1080p. Also 60fps while doing it. just after growing legs and getting a sandwich for you.

Exactly. No chance for 1080p. I mean ZERO. These guys from Infinity Ward care about 60FPS first. Everything else happens if they achieve this goal. I figure 792p just like the "Beta" I put it into quotes as the Beta was the final product. No way they would take a chance of huge glitches showing up in the Beta weekend to trash the rep of Xbone even more.
