there really is very little anyone could do for the wiiU.  with development times in excess of 2 years any changes made today wouldn't show up in meaningful ways until long after the wiiU is a lost cause.

..now if nintendo pulls a sony and learns from their mistakes there is still time to enter the next generation with renewed interest and growth.

For that to happen, Nintendo would need  to improve their marketing dramatically as soon as possible. That is the thing that is killing the Wii U. Horrid marketing all around.

Ditching the Wii U would be the worst move they could ever make. Right now, the only people buying the console are dedicated Nintendo fans. They are the only customers that are still interested in Nintendo's hardware proposition. Scraping the Wii U so soon would be a huge affront to those faithful buyers and it might turn them off buying another Nintendo console ever again which would mean Nintendo would have effectively lost all their potential customers.

Horrible marketing didn't help but the software drought that lastest almost an entire year after the release of the console was way more damaging. After all, it's hard to market a video game console that doesn't have games.

If you are a true fan you would certainly understand the need to dump the console. Plus your games would likely be backwards compatible with whatever system they design. You may even get a loyalty discount.

And I pose this question again; what else should they do? They are bleeding money on these things and keeping up a production line is a costly venture. 

That's why I hope the marketing will improve once games  like Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros 4 come out.. After all those are the biggest games the Wii U is getting this year ( I am doubtful regarding Zelda U coming out this year)

I'm a fan because no matter how succesful the console Nintendo always managed to provide me with a great number of high quality games over the course of the console's lifetime. If I get screwed over, I'll be very wary of buying a new console.

About what they can do for the Wii U: first and foremost release games. Every game sold is a profit for them, also the more games available the more people who are on the fence will go ahead and buy the console. For the console itself, they have to find a way to sell it at a profit (easier said than done, I know).

All of this won't give them the level of success the PS4 and Xbox One are enjoying right now but it'll allow them to survive while they come up with their next offering for which they'll have hopefully learned from their mistakes.

It sounds like Iwata is giving up on the Wii U. I fear that all of his subordinates will now be influenced to do a crappy job on Wii U going forward.This makes me very angry. Really, there are some obvious things that need to be fixed right now:-Speed up the OS. Why does it take a ridiculous 10+ seconds to load the Settings menu? It takes a few milliseconds on my phone.-Bring the giant Wii VC catalog over to Wii U-Enable use of Wii U GamePad and Wii U Pro controller for Wii games - operating motion controls in front of the gamepad is really silly-Also, a SKU of Wii U without the game pad would significantly lower the price, which is obviously the main obstacle preventing people from buying Wii U.
