I agree. The name is terrible
I get when they revealed the name and the philosophy of not forgetting about U when aiming the console for Wii type audiences... but they have largely forgotten about U because they almost treat it as if PS3 and X360 never existed so any improvements they are offering core gamers disappointed in Wii lack of HD and online services are happening on top of Wii as an improvement, and not against the PSN / XBL as an inferior offering.
Also, as they did before, they are under serving the "core" gamers on next-gen capabilities by being the least powerful new console on the market and as such do not get many of the best 3rd party games (the exact problem the Wii always had being repeated).
Nintendo basically lacked clear vision on 3DS (no one cares for 3D), but made it up with derth of quality games unique to handheld console space
Nintendo again lacked clear vision on Wii U (no one cares for tablet controller), but can't really make it up with surge of quality gaming unique to it because the competition from MS and Sony is much stronger for home console than it is on portable space.
I like the Wii U a lot, but it will never amount to anything more than a secondary console for me.
It is the best console for a family and for couch multiplayer and my young kids with games like Nintendo Land and Super Mario 3D World that even my 5 year olds can enjoy. Kid friendly quality games on it that can be played with Wii remotes is where they succeed. The Gamepad is a large gimmick thing with short battery life that is too big for kids hands.
