Valve has the Steam Service. A service that alot of PC players love to use. And Sony is using a new service called PSNOW.
I was thinking about the originnal Xbox One anouncement and always online DRM thing. Its actually incredibly close to perhaps how Steambox works esentially. Although they still had a BD drive for physical copies, but yet still had to adhere to the online DRM pilosophy.
My toughts followed on to in a couple of years what MS might do with hardware revisions. I actually think itsa real posibility we could see a disc less Xbox One and one that is solely Xbox LIve and online copies of games, but with all MS exclusive games. Even allowing every PC player to subscribe to this Xbox service for all the same games. Much like what Valve are attempting. Still available would be the normal disc based console, but this would open up Xbox as a fully fledged service across devices rather than just one device essentially. It would still allow MS to reach for the centre of the living room and yet grow the brand massively.
People would still be drawn to purchasing the One in either form alongside the PC service as The Onebox essentially povides more than gaming for the big screen. Its not out of the question in my opinion and the exclusives on PC could be a real draw away from Steam. As the Xbox service would also contain all the 3rd party stuff.
Xbox as a service piece of software with Windows 8 as it is on he One now wit the Kincect hardware licensed out to say TV manufacturers could work amazingly. TV's would include the revised chipset and lower heat demands but with the full Xbox service, apps, all games etc. All with Kinect either built into the TV or as it is standing alone in the TV box..
The existing disc based no DRM model would still exist for those that didnt want Online only. but Expanding their markt further into Steam territory could do no harm. In fact mke them more money on Software wer it counts. Existing Xbox One sales wouldnt be hurt as those who dont like gaming on PC would still buy the existing format. As they already do.
I think this would be a great move. Negating games consoles eventually.
Do you think this would be smart by MS?
