Forums - Sales Discussion - Japan sales - Media Create, Famitsu, Dengeki: week 39 ( Sept 23 - Sept. 29 )

The Zelda remake has failed, and it's one more that adds to the list of disappointments of the year. Looking very tough for the Wii U ahead. With no big sellers for a while, console sales should drop to abysmal levels until the new bundles hit at the end of this month. Even then, I don't think there will be much of a difference.

The only saving grace might be SM3DW, and it's still debatable. 2D Mario wasn't able to generate interest in the console and there's been just too much Mario during the last years. We'll see, but at the moment I'm thinking Wii U might move less units this Holiday season than the last one. There is basically nothing from November to February, so that game drought will hit the Wii U badly, might even take it to new record lows if SM3DW isn't the hit NCL is expecting it to be.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Sales are low, but given that new bundles will arrive at the end of the month, there`s a chance people are postponing buying the game+console.

Well .. 30k. Yes, Zelda is not that good in Japan as in the West, but even Lego City did 26k in it's FW sales. But okay .. but that there isn't ANY HW-Boost is very sad .. hopefully the Wii Party U Bundles can do it in Japan. But I think the japanse market is a little bit changing to the western Style I have the feeling.

That is an interesting hypothesis, do you have any supporting evidence?

I see the Japanese market continually moving more towards Handheld and Core Mobile gaming while the western market is emphasizing new consoles and PC (while mobile is also big and getting bigger they are often derided as 'casual')

I see the Japanese market blowing up with games like Monster Hunter while the series remains quite niche in Western markets.

I've actually been quite shocked by the radically different evolution of the Japanese gamign market as opposed to the Western gaming market in the last 10-15 years or so.

I can't believe people are defending those Wind Waker sales. Ocarina of Time 3D did 160k first week - that's a huge drop. I'm a big Zelda fan but these are bad sales, remake or not. 30k is an appropriate opening for a niche game but not one of Nintendo's biggest franchises - this game got pushed and marketed, it was not a silent release. And it didn't push any systems - Nintendo expected this to be a system seller. Tell any gamer from the late 90's that a Zelda game released in Japan, did 30k week one and pushed the hardware to 3.6% market share and they'd laugh at you.

Wind Waker HD is a remake of a GC game that already had relatively low sales in japan. Never expected the remake has much impact in japan, but I think the western sales will be much better. Perhaps some people in japan waited for the new bundles.

I am curious about the EU sales of Wind Waker. The US retail sales will be heavy crippled by eShop sales, because the eShop version is already out there and a lot of fans will not be able to wait for the retail version ... but we will see some effect on the hardware sales.

No noticeable bump for Vita or WiiU. Even with Zelda and Legend of Heroes.

No way. Wind Waker will be old news by the end of the month. Those who wanted it will have it by then. Console is needing games awfuly right now, and nothing big is coming out until SM3DW during November, and after it, nothing til February with Wii Fit U, which I'm not considering as a big release since it will go on sale digitally wth the new bundles at the end of the current month. Console will undergo a new drought another time, history repeating itself and Nintendo promising things they won't be able to deliver. Nintendo is lacking content and their strategy is failing time and time again.

I just wonder how they are going to communicate this to the stockholders during the Q2 results in the upcoming weeks.

I think, relatively, Wind Waker sales in Japan were pretty high compared to other Zelda games.  3rd highest LT sales and 5th highest FW, especially on Gamecube's installbase.

I don`t think a month is enough to make it old news.
You are also forgetting about Wii Party U, Wii Sports Club and probably Sonic.
Wii Fit U will be released this year aswell. The trial ends on February.

Not to mention other 3rd party games.
