Forums - PC Discussion - Why Steam OS will probably be huge...

Valve announce they are launching their own OS.  No this isn't Linux, this is  Steam built from Linux.  Here I will break down why this is massive:

1) It's FREE.  This means:

-Those $400 budget builds that rival an Xbox One's performance now cost $300.

-Boutique builders can now sell their $600 entry level Alienware for $500

2) A consistent and tailor made gaming platform.

-Game makers no longer have to worry about what version of Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8) their fanbase will be using, or what version of Linux.  They now know ALL of their userbase will be using the latest Steam OS.  Less bugs and quicker updates.

-Games will perform better since the OS is made for gaming (Not gaming, Multitasking, Productivity).

-Valve will get into the living room without disrupting PC gaming.  They will only enhance it by allowing you to stream (Like VitaTV).

Overall this OS has potential to blow up as fast as Steam did or faster.  Prepare for the future OS of DIY!

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

I can't drop Windows since I need it for work, but I agree that it's going to be good for those who want a dedicated PC as a Steambox.

e=mc^2

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

I am very happy that a sector of the gaming community is working hard to get rid of Windows.

Games are the only reason why I am on Windows right now.

I hope it picks up steam.

Time will tell.

I think this will do well with one sector of the gaming community but as yet I don't see it as any significant threat to the status quo.

For example, it's basically useless to me because I only have a laptop which is horrid for running games. I won't be streaming them to my HD TV. This (and worse, tablets over PCs altogether) is the growing trend amongst general users as I'm sure your well aware, except for PC gamers who will eat SteamOS up.

A PS4 will still cost less than buying a gaming PC rig to make this worthwhile to John Q Public.

Now we'll see what Valve announces on the hardware side......

I agree. This could become big. I am ready to drop Windows as soon as this releases if I see more positive things about it

so you only use your pc for gaming then...

OT

no it wont.  huge is a rather silly thing to say to be honest.  It will be niche... at best

No it's the only reason he uses Windows over the myrid of competitors.

^^^^ This! ^^^^

Actual computers are a dying breed.  So, introducing a new OS for people to program for is about as bad an idea that can really be brought up.  Hard core gaming rigs are already a small market niche, now they want people writing code for games to make a version for that?  Not going to be successful.  If google had done it, maybe, as they can throw $500 million at it and make it happen.

Gaming PC sales have gone up steadily the past few years, and Nvidia alone sells ~40 million graphics cards PER YEAR.  PC gaming is not, and has never been niche.

So I wonder why Windows has 94% market share still.  All of that myriad of alternatives are relative failures.  Weird world huh?

That is exactly why this is huge news.  This competitor will have the proper backing to not be a failure.

Those 400$ budget pc builds never include the Os anyway or even a key board, mouse or even a monitor

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
