If I was new to the series I think Galaxy I and II would be my top picks. My only complaint about those games is that the levels are so damn linear. I don't want a full GTA style open world for Mario but say 8 huge themed worlds with 20+ starequivalent shinies to collect (among other things) in each area.

Valid criticism. If it wouldn't be for the linearity Mario Galaxy would easily become my favorite Mario game.

Definitely SMB3. The original was pretty awe-inspiring too, however, and Super Mario Galaxy is a masterpiece in its own way. But Mario 3 is the best of them all. I think 3D World could potentially push its way up the list.

SM64, it was just a jawdropping experience at the time, the looks, the sounds, controls and everything. Playing it for the first time really felt special and that's a great memory i have about the game.

It's probably my all time favourite game.

i'd have to say mario 3d world. I only got to play a few levels around e3, but playing a 3d mario with 3 other gamers was the most fun i've ever had with a mario game. But i will say it's not my definitive answer. Mario 3 is a strong competitor. It was just so deep, varied and challenging. Great game. I think if i thought about it objectively, mario 3. If i add in the fun factor, mario 3d world.
