Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Recouping Hardware Losses THrough Software Price-Hike

Any one who things games will stay at the same price are delusional, everything goes up in price including games unless you want to play nothing but half ass'd party casual mini games.

Chrono Trigger costs something like $70 new in the US (SNES).
It was very expensive (don't have the documentation at hand right now).

I also remember paying $50 for USCF Chess for the Intellivision (that's $106.11 in 2007).

Mike from Morgantown

PS -- I got my Ogre Battle 64 by trading in three games (two of them Foresaken 64) to EB Games.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

With something like a videogame which has a tiny per-unit cost, there is no need to increase the per-unit price if you can increase sales at a faster rate than your costs increase. The problem with the videogame industry is that the development costs have been increasing at a faster rate than sales since the industry was created; if you averaged 15% growth per year (which is unusually rapid growth) you can double development costs every generation, since the NES development costs have been quadrupling (on average) every generation.

Oh SNES and Genesis games got up there in price. I remember SF2 for SNES cost me $77.99 at EB games and PSIV was $89.99 for Genesis. Don't get me started on N64 or ESPECIALLY Neo Geo games.

I don't see what's so bad about this (aside from us spending more money). Sony 1st party games were generally cheaper in PAL regions than third party games, much like MS 1st party games were $10 cheaper than 3rd party games here in the States. Now, Sony's games will cost the same as 3rd party titles, much like MS' games cost $60 now in NA (started with Gears of War).

As for the discussion on super expensive cartridges back in the day, I remember paying $70 for the original Turok when it came out. :|

I think the 1st party games are still a bit cheaper

N64 carts were $60 as well.

American dollars? I NEVER saw any N64 game priced above $50 (US) ever.

Anecdotal evidence for the win

Goldeneye was $69 when I bought it the day of release but the price came down quick.

Wow...Why don't I remember that? Oh yeah, because I was...9 or 10. lol

Oh well, I guess it's best I don't remember.

On topic, Sony's just doing what they have to do. Nothing wrong with it.

It was $50 both times I bought it.  First at launch and then a year or so later when I lost the first copy.  Money well spent.

Occasionally Sony gives gilmmers of hope as far as PR goes. If you're going to do a price hike like this be honest about it, as you can see from the reaction here gamers are ok with stuff usually as long as you don't lie to them or tell them what to do.

well...this won't help the ppl going for a budget system cause when they look at how expensive each game it compared to another console (Wii), they may decide to buy the Wii instead even if the PS3 and Wii are the same price

Funny thing is in Au - I haven't paid full price on a ps3 game yet. I see them for $120au - But I got COD4 for $79au from big w. There are many places and deals going around that you don't need to pay top dollar for.

End of 2011 Sales: Wii = 90mil, 360 = 61mil, PS3= 60mil
