Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony: Online DRM "Up To Publishers"

I have some games with online passes on my PS3, Assassins Creed 3 and others, hitman i think. The Xbox 360 don´t have that?

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

So do people really think that if a company blocks a used game on the x1 they'll just allow the ps4 game to be sold used? All they have to do is put a code that is never sold and cant be deleted.

Secondly if the company makes there game with Internet in mind with the x1 why wouldn't they use Internet on the ps4 aswell

The way im seeing this wjole thing is sony is just saying hey were not the one putting the drm in the game its the publisher so be mad at them

It's basically this: Sony didn't implemented a system for 3rd parties to implement DRM on the PS4. However if EA wants to use DRM, they can definitely do it by their own methods.

Now, here comes the problem: we now know that MS have DRM (and endorse it), so, will this become an industry standard? not at the beginning at least. EA, Ubisoft and Activison are the top candidates to implement DRM, if this companies do DRM on all consoles (and that includes Wii U...well let's exclude EA) and they see profits, then all the other publishers will follow suit.

Those 3 companies I mentioned are probably very happy with MS because with them it will be much easier to use DRM (there's also the 1 day check in, which will help the console from piracy), while on Sony it will more "difficult", but that won't stop them.

It's good that Sony didn't implemented a way for 3rd parties to use DRM, but that won't stop the problem in the long run.

Nintendo and PC gamer

Now we will get to see who are the real douche publisher.

Same as PS3, stop it guys its over, Sony Won.

Woah woah woah, slow down. You judge all that from the immediate aftermath of a conference? I concede the fact that this is no different to the PS3 in principle, but still, your judgement seems somewhat premature.

Although it certainly seems like that right now, a lot can change.

Unless they hike the price from $399 to $499 (not happening), I don't see much changing that will hurt them (not worried about games either, this is Sony, after all). Things are looking good and I see no reason to become skeptical over nothing.

Don't get me wrong, I'm far from skeptical. I expect them to do well, but still...I don't know. I'll reserve judgement until after the system's launch, that way we'll know for certain. Not long to wait now

Yeah that's what I feel right now. A bit of an over-reaction maaaaaaybe, but still, it's my concern.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

If a game requires internet connection for it to function developed by publishers, it requires internet connection to function. It's the same as it always has been. Sony can't change that, just like Sony can't make an MMO play offline. It will depend on how developers design the game and how publishers enforce conditions for the game to function.

The main point is that the PS4 is not changing the model and forcing people to HAVE to connect to the internet no matter what game they are playing and whether it requires internet or not. The console itself doesn't do DRM.

My fear would be an "online pass" to activate single player mode for 2nd hand games and/or an "always online" game.

Ok lets try and put this to bed a little... this is *NOT* the same as what MS are doing.

1. It's the same as the Ps3...
2. Xbox is using console tech as well as publisher stuff to do DRM. E.g You need to log on every 24 hours regardless of games.
3. If a publisher puts in a game, it will have to be a season pass or within the actual game code (because its not implemented into the PS4 tech). You would find out about this, and not buy it, and so publishers wont do it.

So its no different as it is now. It's not the same as MS.

A bit of a blow, no? Looks like things aren't quite so clean-cut as we thought. I stress also that, by the sounds of it right now at least, it will be no different to the system currently in place for the PS3. But with the Xbone having it as the norm, I personally expect more publishers will embrace the concept.

Apologies for confusion.

yep, just as simple as copy and pasting the 300,000 server infrastructure MS put in place to enforce their DRM at participating resellers..
