Why do sexually transmitted diseases even exist in the first place? I'm sure i learned about this years ago, but I forget...

500 years ago STD's didn't exist. To my knowledge most STD's are just virus other species carry, but are immune to. We aquired it by having sex with them

Syphilis came about because someone had sex with a Camel.

HIV originates from SIV, and three of the main beliefs about how humans got it is by eating, and banging monkeys, and injecting monkey blood to cure diseases.

The rest I dunno about, I imaging herpies has been around for a while though.

Imagine you are a virus, wondering when humans are the most vulnerable and stupid ... And there you have it

What disease would you get from a coconut if you're stuck on an island?

Ceftriaxone 250 mg intramuscular one shot, azithromycin 1000 mg orally x 1 dose.... Takes care of both gonarrhea and chlamydia, treat this shit everyday...

Hippocrates in ancient Greece described STDs. The only newer ones are HIV which is 35 to 100 years old, and Syphillis which was introduced in the early age of exploration, but may have also existed in some form during Roman times where an STD with similar symptoms was described. Also, some form of HIV or something may have existed in Europe and Asia thousands of years ago due to a certain percentage of the population who were naturally immune to it before exposure to the current outbreak.

Because viruses could use every body contact to spread. They don't care if it is sperm or a a handshake, but many viruses prefer a wet enviroment.

Since humans live near to animals (since humans domesticate animals) some mutated animal viruses could transfer to humans, some even don't need contact for this, it is enough to breath the same air. This is very rare but the possibility grows if many humans live near to animals in their house (like the bird flu in China).

In general this is not a problem, newer scientific researches even suggest the possibility that some viruses are really useful and essential for humans. But if a virus mutates it could get dangerous for its host.

By the way: Are there really people out there who need another reason for safe sex? Every man or woman with half brain would use condoms anyway.

Syphilis is a New World STD, it was brought back to the main continent by Spanish pirates who invaded the Aztec and Incan Empires.

In your opinion, can you get an STD from a BJ without a condom? Can you pick up an STD from French Kissing a girl?

Just curious because people kiss and have oral sex all the time, would be pretty easy to acquire.

Isn't there a hypothesis that syphillis existed in Europe before American contact? I heard that it was present in Greek and Roman times, but uncommon and poorly documented. However it's likely Columbus introduced it to Europe from Americas as well, but there are no Camels in Americas, so if it came from Camels in the Middle East, what animal did it come from in Americas?

What about human papillomavirus (HPV) I heard that was new.

Not necessarily. It is not believed that HIV came from monkey-banging. The monkeys are/were slaughtered and eaten though.

Oh and I think it's safe to say that STD's did exist 500 years ago. Not some of the most prevalent ones today, perhaps (like HIV), but definitely syphilis, gonorrhea and herpes.

The two main theories are eating infected Monkey Brains, and Monkey Blood Injections. Sex with Monkeys was a distant third theory, but I thought it would be nice to include.

Wait...what? Are you serious? If so, then that is crazy! I may be able to understand the injecting monkey blood thing, because lot of other countries use lots of folk remedies to try and cure themselves. But sex with camels and monkeys?

Well it's unlikely HIV came from sex with infected Monkeys, but it's theoretically possible. Camels are just a hypothesis, it was spread by Columbus, but I dunno what animals he banged to get it.

Those were some horney sailors....

Well, us humans are actually rather lucky.  Mice have about 4 times as many STD's as we do!  It has to do with their population, fast lifecycle (Mice have been mice for many more generations than humans have been human), promiscuity, and lack of condoms, education and health care.

As JazzB1987 pointed out sometimes from other animals.  But it depends on the STD, they think AIDS came from Apes.  They think Gonorrhea from sheep, Chlamydia happens to other mammals and to birds - so who knows.

Incidentally, all Flu strains are thought to be bird viruses (chicken) that somehow 'jump species' from a spontaneous mutation every so often.  Sometime with bad results like the ‘Spanish Flu’ epidemic of 1918 which killed 50-100 million people.

But hey, the good news is it looks like human crab lice are being wiped out!

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.
