Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Quick question: Has the Wii U already lasted longer than the 3DS without a price cut?

Not yet. A couple months more.

I think in America it has but in Japan it has not.

Nintendo shouldn't cut the price at all. I don't think a price drop is going to ignite this system like it did for the 3DS. Nintendo should hold off, wait until they are selling it at a profit, and never sell it at a loss again.

Gamecube, N64, and SNES all sold modestly, but they all made profit because they were never sold at a loss. This is the route Nintendo has to take with home consoles. The model that Sony and Microsoft use for their consoles just won't work on Ninty consoles.

Universal price cut wouldn't make any sense at this time as proven by European numbers.
75-100€ less and the sales increased by maybe 10-20% for a few weeks.

March 2011 in US, price cut in August.

Roughly the same amount of time has passed.

Alas, Nintendo is not doing a price cut like they did with 3DS. 3DS was originally sold at a high profit. They're already selling Wii U at a loss, so a price cut is simply not an option. They have an enormous holiday lineup they're announcing at E3, so the sales situation will change dramatically between now and October/Nov/Dec. Wait and see.

The Screamapillar is easily identified by its constant screaming—it even screams in its sleep. The Screamapillar is the favorite food of everything, is sexually attracted to fire, and needs constant reassurance or it will die.

Two major reasons Nintendo will wait much longer with the Wiiu.

1. They over priced the 3ds because the response at e3 was very posative. They had room to drop the price significantly without take a "major" loss per system sold. The wiiu is not over priced. They already don't brake even.

2. A 3ds price drop meant that ds purchasers would move over to the 3ds. It was backwards compatible, close enough in price to the ds, and the ds was still selling well. The wii isn't selling well enough and is so much cheaper than what the wiiu could possibly cost that you wouldn't get the same effect you had with the 3ds.   The wiiu doesn't have kinect or a blu-ray player to convince the ps3/360 buying market to switch to the wiiu.

Wiiu just needs major games to release leading up the Christmas and the interest in the product will greatly increase....  A good time for a price drop would be next spring IMO and then do some amazing post price drop bundles next Christmas to compete against the other next gens.

The 3DS and the Wii U are totally and completely different scenarios, to the point that they really shouldn't be directly compared in terms of price-cut timing.

The 3DS launched with an almost unprecedented mark-up on price above cost. Profit margins that high are something very rarely seen in the console manufacturing industry. It felt like arrogance on the part of Nintendo and more than a few people were ticked off by the "people will line up to buy it no matter what price we set" attitude. That is to say, Nintendo almost had no choice but to apologize and adjust the price in the interest of public relations. Of course, above that, they had the margins to where they COULD cut the price without much damage.

The Wii U, on the other hand, was selling at a loss on launch. They can't afford a knee-jerk price cut. In order to drop the price on the Wii U, they're going to need to wait for the proper timing, which should include a drop in manufacturing cost and the release of games that can be used in effective advertising campaigns.

Simply put, it's apples and oranges. Where they could realistically drop the price on the 3DS just for PR purposes, the Wii U situation is a lot more complicated.

They are probably waiting for the PS4/Nextbox to come out first so they could compete.

3DS had nothing to compete with.

3DS was given a price cut because the psvita had the same price point. $249.99. Iff PS4 is $299.99 WiiU will receive a price cut.

I think they're waiting to see what the PS4 and new Xbox will be priced at to figure out how much to cut, honestly. If both of those consoles launch at more than $400, then Nintendo could be all right just doing a $50 cut. Anything less than $400 would cause a big problem. However I don't realistically see Sony nor Microsoft launching at less than $400.

Bah!
