Not sure how well that would work out. The whole point of the iPhone and iPad is that they're the Ferrari of the phone/tablet world. It'd be like Ferrari bringing out a car to compete with the Golf.

Here in Brazil most people buy Android phone because the iPhone is crazy expensive... maybe it is just for emergent markets like here but a sub-$200 iPhone will sell like water in the desert.

How are you so sure the cheaper Iphone will sell so much? I mean, if people these days want a lower costing Apple phone couldn't they just buy an Iphone 4 or 4S? I think you can get those for $0 in the states and then you pay monthly.

Hmmm... maybe in emerging markets it might do well. I'm more wondering about the change in image in the long-term. Apple have been marketing their products as premium quality. If they start moving into lower markets then that image is going to change, but I'm not sure they'll be able to balance their premium budget market segments.

Considering the high price of the iPhone in Brazil, isn't it likely they'll still price the budget phone quite high, just slightly cheaper then the preimum iPhone?

The S4 might overtake the iPhone 5 at launch, but it will only be for a short time like the S3 vs 4S.

It'll be hard for them to overtake Apple in profit though as the iPhone takes over 70% of the profit of the entire smartphone industry.

Isn't samsung already bigger then Apple in mobile phones?

"Samsung sold 235 million mobile handsets in the year 2009.[44] At the end of the third quarter of 2010, the company had surpassed the 70 million unit mark in shipped phones, giving it a global marketshare of 22 percent, trailing Nokiaby 12 percent.[45] Overall, the company sold 280 million mobile phones in 2010, corresponding to a market share of 20.2 percent.[46] Partially owing to strong sales of the Samsung Galaxy range of smartphones, the company overtook Apple in worldwide smartphone sales during the third quarter 2011, with a total market share of 23.8 percent, compared to Apple's 14.6-percent share.[47] Samsung became the world's largest cellphone maker in 2012, with the sales of 45 million smart phones in the first quarter.[48]"

Weird. I'm on Verizon and have had zero of those problems since launch day. Touch screen works great for me, it crashed once a month after buying, never had a bad connection (probably just cause I have a different carrier), texting doesn't have any of those glitches, and the standard internet works perfectly. Most of my browsing on vgchartz is done with it. I even convinced my brother to get it a few months ago and his also works flawlessly.

Has the software ever updated itself for you? I'm on 4. 1. 2. Have you complained to the store?

I have heard Verizon is better, but like I said, Sprint service from 2003-2012 was fine, even old days of my Nokia 5110 (remember when everyone had those?)  could do the complex task of making a phone call.  I have been to the store multiple times and they kept saying how updates would fix it and it is as bad now as day I bought it.  I tried browsing this site with it and it cannot recognize to type in rpely box or register "submit" button (this is common issue elswhere).

I talked to someone else on here and they said I was stuck with a lemon or something, but it has left a bad taste in my mouth would like a functioning phone someday for work purposes and bit for fun.

You got it for $50 and it doesn't work, the obvious question is were did you get it? If you already said somewhere and I didn't read it properly I apologize in advance.

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I read about this lower cost Iphone. I agree with people who think that the current Apple management doesn't know what direction to take the company. Like, they aren't innovating much anymore and are just carrying on and playing safe with their products. Right now they are living off their brand, but soon people who had Iphones will switch to Android and even Windows soon or a later since those phones are looking more impressive and Apple may find itself introuble again.

Also, I'm not sure how they will price their budget phone  to make it cheaper. Perhaps they will start production of the phone in countries like Brazil to make the phone cheaper?

The local Sprint (my provider) store. That is where I have purchased every phone I have owned.

The 4S costs over $400 here... the 5 over $1000.

I found a contract deal for 4S last weekend... the plan is expensive and you buy the 4S per $150.... nobody like these contract deals here in Brazil... so a cheaper iPhone will destroy.

As I understand it, the big issue with the Brazilian market is enormous tariffs on imported consumer electronics.  It's reflected in the prices you quote. A $400 4S is actually cheaper than it sells in most markets (It costs $550 in US and Canada), so Apple must be assembling those in Brazil. The 5 is obviously so much more expensive because none of that SKU are being manufactured in Brazil (yet?).

Don't take the wishful analyst's word that Apple is making a cheaper iPhone. Apple has had great success so far in achieving strong phone growth while maintaining high average revenue per unit. While a cheaper iPhone could create more growth opportunities, especially in developing markets, it also threatens those high-margin sales and the high-value customers that have made iOS the dominant mobile platform. Apple may be perfectly happy, and more profitbale in the long-term, taking the most valuable 25% of the phone market and leaving the rest to low-margin white box manufacturers.
