Forums - Gaming Discussion - Bioshock Infinite Violates Religious Beliefs, Valve offers Refunds

I'm a serious Christian but I didn't find anything bad with the game at all. People need thicker skins; its just a game after all.

Seriously people get offended far, far to easily.

Also as Truck says, this reeks of hypocrisy.

The Bioshock series criticizes many forms of extremism. My only complaint is that, although Radical Christianity does exist, the kind presented in BioShock Infinite doesn't strike me as being realistic compared to the ideologies present in previous games. Even then, I think the game still make its point pretty well as being against overt nationalism.

In the end, it's their loss. Also, the amount of hypocrisy of someone buying a shooter and then asking for refund because of a baptism is laughable.

Also, some pretty strong ignorance also that baptism is a religous practice in a number of other religious communities.  So, if I understand correctly, there wasn't the opening baptism scene they wouldn't be upset at individuals who happened worship the founding fathers (this is in the opening of the game so not really much of a reveal)?  If not, they need to seriously rethink their religion.  Columbia could be thought of as a modern day city of Babel, based on the nonsense going about in it.  But, maybe they don't see that.

I skipped over a lot of article, because I'm ignorant to all spoilers. Don't want to ruin anything for me.

So are you a self-controlled superhero, or are you unable to read? The people want to know!

What a pack of oversensitive crybabies.

Or maybe both, aka, "Illiterate Plastic Man" who can bend himself into any object he can see, but nothing in writing.

Grest Buperhero.... wait, that might be Dyslexic Plastic Man, who turns himself into mispelled versions of thinks s/he is thinking.

Before we all jump onto the "killing is in all Video games, even mario" Biz, lets first remember that baptism is a very important part of Christianity and is something that really shouldn't be mentioned in a game like this. If I were playing a game, and I had to shoot someone while they were praying, Muslim or not, I'd lose all respect for the game and likely never play it again. It's not about how it violates the religion's beliefs, it's more of how it violates what you think shouldn't be defiled within the context of Religion.

Honestly, using religious concepts in media is just asking for it. I mean it's not like this kind of thing happens often in games, so why use theological things to begin with?( Aside from some Asian games where religion is just used as a theme with little fear of criticism because most of them are atheists.)

It just comes off to me that the BioShock devs couldn't make an interesting story without the use of pulling on heart strings and other dramatic occurrences that happened in the past. Like racism, and the founding of America.

Not like I have a problem with the latter, because things like that should be mentioned as a reminder.

So before you guys jump the ship and attack the man who wanted the refund, because the game has killing in it also , just remember death is a natural occurrence, but baptism and crucifixes are not. This either attacks or references Christianity in some way.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
