Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Should Nintendo release a Wii U SKU without the Tablet Controller?

They SHOULD have made the Gamepad optional to begin with. But now it's too late for that and they can't do a roll backwards. So at this point, no.

But you are right the Gamepad was a bad idea. I like it a lot personally but it's just too expensive and too complicated for 90% of the world's population. Nintendo wanted to satisfy the core and the mass market with the tablet but failed to satisfy either... how ironic. I still fail to understand why they didn't just make a Wiimote 2.0 (better motion tracking, better speakers, built in battery, new design) + camera sensor (Kinect-like) combo and put a damn classic controller into the core package. That way classic controllers and Wiimotes would've been the standard, devs would've been happy, manufacturing costs would be lower and both the core and the expanded market would have been satisfied. But nope, Nintendo had to go with the monster tablet.

That's because of faggots like Pachter and shitty developers that hate Nintendo AKA all developers that don't develop for Nintendo platforms, exceptions being Valve and Blizzard.

Santa Monica Studios can suck my ass. And "Epic" more like Shitty Games. And EA. And any fuckface that makes games for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Everyone bitches about how Nintendo should make a Wii HD and they'd buy if there was one and Nintendo makes it and no one buys it.

And lastly, shut up about the Wii U being a failure. It's not. You're on VGChartz. You should be at least smart enough to look up sales of Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U. If you align their launches, they have both had the same performance sales wise so far. I'd start calling the doom of Nintendo in a year when Wii U hasn't sold 10 million units. And even then, I'm not going to start saying Nintendo is doomed anyway because I'm not a moron. Nintendo will always have money because they are a profitable company, unlike Sony and Microsoft who just throw billions away just to have videogame consoles.

Damn. Bad day? I've seen you make these kinds of posts before so I'm not sure why you're still hanging around here. Seems like you want a permaban.

Everyone wanted a Wii HD, Nintendo is just late to the HD party. HD is no longer a selling point as it is a standard feature that is expected, even in tablets these days.

Yup.
Relaunch it with a true Wii Sports sequel and two Wiimote plus in the same bundle, mybe throw in the 2D Mario to sweeten the deal even more.

That would make it fly off the shelves.

I LOVE ICELAND!

I've been critical of the gamepad idea from it's announcement and I think it's a weight around WiiU's neck dragging it down.

The lower end WiiU should have included a Wiimote/nunchuk and been sold to the Just Dance/Wii___ crowd. The higher end WiiU should have included the Gamepad and all games should have been made to work with either Wiimote/nunchuk or gamepad/pro controller. If they had done so, the basically model could have been even cheaper and would be more immediately understandable (and desirable) to it's intented audience. Having said that, the only game out for that audience in NSMBU (as Nintendoland requires Gamepad) and I'd bet most of Wii's casual audience haven't finished NSMBWii yet.

Regardless, Nintendo bet the farm on the gamepad and there's no going back now. It'd confuse an already confused market even more, suggest to developers and gamers that Nintendo's lost faith in their own product, would split the market as games are already out and no one if going to spend money to retroactively make their games compliant with Wiimotes/pro controllers - since they didn't sell in the first place. Going forward all games could be designed to work both ways but likely 3rd parties (and even Nintendo) would half-ass one control scheme or both.

If Nintendo can't figure out a game that utilizes the gamepad in a fun and unique way that gets people to take notice (like Wii Sport/Wii FIt/Guitar Hero or Just Dance did in their times) which can't be simply emulated with SmartGlass, then they should be working getting Wii3 out or dropping the price $100 ASAP.

I know, right?  I can't BELIEVE that Santa Monica Studios won't make any games for the Wii U.

The bitterness is strong.

On topic, no, they can't get rid of the gamepad at this point.  However, they should shift emphasis away from the gamepad.  They need to show people that the Wii U is ALSO the Wii 2 and can play all those casual games with the Wiimote just like the Wii.  That might win back some of the casual crowd.  Otherwise, they stand to lose a lot of those people to Microsoft and Kinect 2.0.  You can bet that the 720 will show off motion controls from Day One.

Necrobumping this to tell you that Persona sucks.

You just called out a great RPG series because someone who has a different preference to gaming than you has it to their "Playing" list? Wow...

@OT - No , especially since it is a major factor for the product itself and could be used a main controller for future games other than the Wiimote/etc.

Correction, Persona is the greatest RPG series.... in my opinion lol

OT- Why would they get rid of the only thing besides Mario that makes people want a Wii U?

PlayStation Vita Japanese Software Sales (Media Create Physical/ Famitsu Digital)

Dont get me wrong I love nintendo and plan on getting a Wii U but I believe they should have released the Super Wii holiday 2010 to counter Kinect/Move.

-HD graphics with 1gb ram, could hype it up as the most powerful console on the market

-delay Motion Plus and Sports Resort and have them ready for launch

-2 skus, 4gb SSD and Motion Plus for $300 and 40GB HDD with Motion Plus, Sports Resort and Pro Controller for $400 (nintendo would have a console to match price of each 360 sku and PS3 was still $300-400)

-launch window games would be similar to Wii U, Darksiders, AC:Brotherhood, Black Ops, Arkham Asylum, Mass Effect 2, MH Tri HD, Just Dance, Super Mario Galaxy 2

-would get good 3rd party support 2011-2013

-price drop in may 2012 to $250/300 for each sku, would also cause PS360 to cut price

-at e3 2013 when Sony/Microsoft are showing off there new consoles, they could show off a redesigned Super Wii that is our current Wii U with the gamepad, and 8gb/64gb skus with NintendoLand packed in, keep the price $250/300. This could easily give Super Wii an extra 2-3 years and release the next gen console in 2016

They really should have made the tablet controller a separate peripheral, and not a requirement for the system, the same way that M$ has marketed Kinect. This allows them to offer several different SKUs for different types of gamers... the "core" market who game alot have the 250GB bundle, usually with a couple of AAA games, and the more casual / family audience has the 4GB bundles with or w/out Kinect.

The Wii U on the other hand currently has only two bundles... one with a $60 game and one without for $50 less. Both have limited storage, which requires the purchase of a dedicated external HDD or several SD cards to supplement storage issues. Considering the fact that you need Wiimotes or pro controllers in order to play multiplayer of any variety on the system, having the tablet as a mandatory controller becomes a hindrance, as you're spending all that money for it when a pro controller or Wiimote and nunchuk will suffice for most games, and you can only have one tablet per system (yes I know you can use two, but they aren't being sold separately at the moment so that point is moot.)

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

No no no! The one thing that will render the tablet controller redundant as a gaming device is if a significant number of Wii U owners don't have it.

Nintendo bloody struggled to get anyone to make use of WiiMotion Plus because it only shipped with a proportion of consoles after Wii had been out for a few years.

OTOH, it would effectively make WiiU merely the WiiHD that Pachter was calling for back in 2010. So if they could price it at $199 it might sell pretty well.

Reminds me of threads from two years ago saying Nintendo should release a 3DS without 3D capabilities. Just as facepalm-worthy.

And Sony should release a PS3 SKU without the Dualshock 3...

No, only you want him permabanned.

He is a great user and says it like it is, and is annoyed with general stupidity, and well I don't blame him.

He disagrees with the Nintendo hate and sees big issues elsewhere in the industry, and he is not incorrect.
