Well, you could get a girlfriend who doesn't need to be reassured for 20 minutes that you're not cruising drag queen message boards I guess.

Why do people care so much and get upset over other people's avatars and sigs? I've never had a single problem with either in my 5 1/2 years as a member.
Like others have said; if you're browsing this site at work or school, shouldn't you be doing your job and/or studies? And if you're ashamed of browsing the site with your friends or family around, you're either paranoid or they need to calm the hell down.

Can you read a tabloid magazine or a fashion magazine? How about newspapers? Scantily clothed people appear in these all the time (especially tabloids). I just had to check to confirm my suspicion; you're from the US, things like this are often blown entirely out of proportion in the US, lighten up people.

And if your girlfriend can't understand what the site is about upon actually seeing and reading the content and gets hung up on the avatars, she has a problem. Is she illiterate?

Messaging other users to make them change their avatars is childish and extreme in my honest opinion.

we had this discussion already a year or so ago. conclusion was that most people have no problem with it except some from usa.

i seriosuly don't see the difference if i'm at work and someone will see an avatar like you have or a woman with a kaz head. both show that it has nothing to do with your work, if you are allowed to surf on such a site at your break i don't see the problem and if you aren't allowed to do that your avatar isn't better to hide what you do.

and for private reasons, i wouldn't be embarrased if someone would see that i am in a forum and someone has a drag queen avatar or whatever. 

All internet forums with avatars are pretty much like this...

What is uncomfortable about telling people you're on a website where people can choose their own avatars, thus the strange strange avatars? Do people think you control the avatar of every user on here? If so, then you need smarter friends. If no, then why would people judge you for something you cannot control?

I'm in the majority that doesn't care about avatars or sigs. I feel for you on that whole having to explain to your girl thing, that sucks. I wish I could hide some of my forum buddy shit cause if my wife sees "dat ass and or "Just cameltoe" glowing orange, it's gonna cause a controversy in my house...lol.
