Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is releasing a $400 plus console a bad Idea?

I have not been around in vgchartz for a long time - so not many people know me well.

I am a nintendo fan at heart, they will always be my favourite.

But I do love sony and have deep respect for microsoft. So this is not a thread i made to proclaim doom.

We all expect the upcoming consoles to be massive leaps in power, naturally this would translate into an epensive console. Generally people have predicted a $400 plus console for both the ps4  and 720. I live in Australia, so a $400 console would be $700-$800 down under. Personally I feel it is too expensive, especially in this terrible economy. The gaming enthusiast will buy the console regardless of the price, but the average gaming hobbyist will unlikely take the bait until they are cheaper. I fear the upcoming next gen console like the Wii U will find difficulties getting a good foothole during their infant years, this can't bode well for their respected companies and the developers who invest in the next gen.

Ultimately my question is releasing a $400 plus console a bad idea? And what is a reasonable price for a next gen console from microsoft and sony?

Bet with ninjablade:

Ninjablade wins if the next 5 multiplat on the wii u are inferior to the 360 version.

I win if one of the 5 mulitplats are on par or superior on the Wii U.

I just want to get this straight...

"I do love sony and have deep respect for microsoft"

I think a $400 console is not only possible but probable. It'll be easier on Microsoft, but I think it'll be possible given the modest specs of both systems. The most expensive aspect of either console next gen will be the CPU and GPU and they don't even appear to be that expensive.

Depending on what memory is being used, the memory could be cheap. The HDD is inexpensive. The Blu-Ray drive will be inexpensive. Again the most expensive thing will be the CPU and GPU and both of those decrease dramatically over time.

well i'll buy at £350 not sure where that is in other peoples money,i doubt it will be any lower than that over here

a bad idea, well gaming has always been expensive from what i can remember,s/ware used to kill us in price

Yes, it's a bad idea. Won't stop anyone from doing it though. Won't stop third parties from investing heavily into these consoles either.

It was already a bad idea to do so in 2005/2006 when the world economy was still going strong. But since the video game industry managed to turn things around eventually, they don't see any real problems by doing the same thing all over again in a worse economy and with higher development costs for games.

Well, EA is one of those third parties and this time there isn't a Wii where they can make some quick cash with shovelware, so something good may come from all this.

Always look on the bright side of life...

400$ or 400€(screw 1:1 translations for us euros) are probably the smallest number you can get if you want good hardware that isn't outdated 2 weeks after release.
600 would give you the option what the PS3 is doing now > Still getting pushed
400 will give them good sales and both(Sony and M$) have seen what a high price can/could do to them.
So they won't be as powerful as they can be but they are still a huge leap with a reasonable price.

And people who have an addiction will buy the stuff.400 isn't that much if you have a decent job.
There are even people who will buy the new Nvidia card for 900$ just for the sake of having it.

400 (AUD) is about my limit for a console i.e. the price of the Wii U in Australia.

Any console that is $400 in the US is likely to be pushing $500 in Australia and is therefore not going to be purchased until the price comes down somewhat.

My limit is €700, just like others have that limit for phones and tablets.

"bbuutt with phones u can call people"

Yes I know and so can I with a €50 phone.

I just hope it's under $500 in Australia so I can get some games with it too.
