Forums - General Discussion - Is National pride stupid?

AS long as you're reasonable with it, I see no issue. I agree with Carlin, though - pride should be reserved for something you earned, not something you were born with or were given.

Though I admit, of patriots worldwide, I tend to hate American patriots the most because not only are they the most delusional, but they're RIGHT THERE! one floor down! I can't go anywhere without "AMERICAN FUCK YEAH!" chants, and a constant reminder of how arrogant the nation is as a whole. Which wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't at the expense of others. Fuck immigrants. fuck foreigners. Fuck muslims and anyone who doesn't believe the god we do. Fuck canada for thinking they're better than us! Fuck people in our own country who we deem un-american or anti-constitutionalist.

So really, it's just the rednecks and red-states.

Still, national pride is often misplaced and silly. I like being in Canada because I feel safe here, but I'm not deluded into thinking the nation I was born in is perfect. In fact, there's a lot of historical instances where I'm straight up sickened by my ancestors!

I think being happy with what you are is nice, but proclaiming it makes you superior to another is silly.

That's really all that needs to be said.

it's not really "stupid" (that sounds so bad) but it doesn't really make sense that so many people born in one country are proud of that if they are those who would be also proud of norway, italy, usa, germany, canada, brazil or whatever if they would be born there.

they should have logical reasons for what they are proud of and not just "i'm so proud to be a xyz because....because i'm born there but if i would be born in one of the other 200+ countries i would be proud of that country"

and i don't think you can be really proud about the whole country, just about the good of the country but every country has also some bad sides.

Pride, as in not having shame, is fine.  But so many people seem to get swept up in naive arrogance.  Some people are so sure that they are right – when they don’t know any different.

Xx is the best country on earth – have you been anywhere, No! Don’t need too!

Like that crazy lady that called Obama a communist - she was proud about the fact that she had no idea what she was saying or what it meant.

Yes
You can't be proud of anything these days in your country.
No country is doing more good than bad things.

Some countries don't care for the people. Not everywhere healthcare but rather investing in more weapons.
Lettings rapers get away with "Yeah he did it just once" and all that 2nd chance garbage.

Everyone who is neutral and sane can probably count more bad things about their own country than good things.

As long as you're not a white, straight, Christian male from any European or North American country, being proud of your orgins/heritage/country is completely OK !!!

Nah, Japanese aren't allowed to be proud either.

Yeah but they can be quite xenophobic in return...

Yes, it's easy to be sure when you don't know any better.  But, then you realize any extra knowledge is threatening, and that leads to a whole nother set of problems. It's really kinda sad.
