Forums - Nintendo Discussion - From A Skeptic: Where Nintendo Should Take The Wii U

if only gunpei yokoi was still here. he was the only hardcore developer at N that could have kept the company up to snuff with mature audiences.

Ninty has to make a clone of arkam city and call it metroid. Get gta 5. and make lots of titles that cant be done without tablet control. (eg. scribblenauts, mario paint, et al)

the wii u gamepad is the tech that will save their butts.. it will succeed. some designer is going to pull off a feat that is impossible on anything else.

3) Miyamoto already admitted they will never create a hardcore character for older audiences. He said himself that he would never create a character or a game he cannot play while on the couch with his family.

And this is why, quite frankly, Mr. Miyamoto's "semi-retirement" may not be such a bad idea.

He's a great developer and should be allowed to make whatever crazy game idea that pops into his head without any question. He's earned that right.

But holding your entire company hostage to whims of one creator is asinine. It would be like every movie made by Universal Studios having to be cleared by Steve Spielberg or made for Steven Spielberg's family. I mean it's a ridiculous notion.

Iwata agrees with him and Nintendo as a company insists upon the family image. There are no mature first party titles.Thats probably why I havent purchased Nintendo products in a while. I just feel they haven't grown up for me. They were there for me when I was a child and I will get it for my children when they are young, but they just never grew up with me. I grew out of Mario and it hasnt been my cup of tea since N64. Mario Sunshine was nice but meh.

Iwata is a developer himself, so there´s the whole 'empathy' thing.Maybe he gives just too much freedom to Aonuma and Sakamoto.

The reaction on the pad that I've gotten from women tends to be negative. I get a lot "what the hell is that? Why's it so big?" (insert jokes here, but in all seriousness).

The Wiimote was chic and sleek, the Wii U pad kinda comes off like the car Homer designed in the Simpsons.

I think they could make a smaller, sleeker model, and keep the bigger one around too (for order through Nintendo.com) for those whole want it.

I do think the Nintendo TVii stuff has serious potential, but it can't look like that. Women especially are well attuned these days to nice looking electronics thanks to Apple and the tablet/smartphone boom. And they were a key demographic for the first Wii, I don't think this controller "look" is doing Nintendo any favours right now.

Nintendo needs to learn to be a hell of a lot more image concious with the look and marketing of their products. They are way too clueless right now. It's not the 80s or 90s anymore, mistakes here will hurt you big time.

Now that you say it, yeah I guess women played a big part in the Wii´s success, and I wonder if the gamepad is somewhat 'intimidating' to them.

I actually don't mind Nintendo having some sense of social responsibility with the content they create. I cringed during Sony's press conference when a bunch of cheers erupted during "The Last of Us" trailer where the guy got his head blown off. To me that reinfornces the "games are for high school boys or those who are stuck at that age".

But damnit, not every game needs to be the same rainbow-colored asthetic with a mascot or furry animal as the main character. It becomes as cliche from Nintendo as the bald space marine.

Surely there's some middle ground between Mario or Animal Crossing and extremely violent/sexualized video games. One of the reasons I've suggested Nintendo take a look at the Bond license, because even though there are "adult themes" in that property, they're generally done in good fun/tounge in cheek.

MAIN POST

Good post =)

Although, I would say go with a more unknown actress/actor, one that people don't already try to ingore.

I actually really like the controller, and while I would enjoy a sexier re-design, I would not be keen on a smaller one. I already have handheld systems.

Points 2-4: don't give a damn about large and bloated third parties unless they want to become second parties. I feel Nintendo can generally do a lot better at the center of a bunch of second parties than trying to get third party games.

Invest in smaller companies, TOTALLY agree. Maybe form a lot of strong alliances here with the best of these.

Square Enix, FF7 on a Nintendo console is something that should have happened a long time ago. 3DS has had FF7 rumored before, MAKE IT SO.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I think Wii U is in good shape, however I think your ideas are excellent. All of them. Nintendo would be brilliant to implement them. Outstanding post.

How about Kate Upton and Megan Fox "zombi-fying" each other using the GamePad and ZombieU? That's all they would need to do. Don't even show anything else in the game. Just those two making each other Zombies and laughing. And touching...

I really think that retro studios should develope a new IP thats aiming a little more at adult gamers.
but it should still fit into the nintendo universe (that means it shouldn't be all gory and violent, miyamoto wouldn't be happy about this).

maybe they are working on that right know!

The most hardcore character in videogames is Super Mario, and he's targeted at older audience (ie, above teenagers). There's a distinct difference between characters targeted for grown-ups, and characters targeted for teenagers.

Well, Miyamoto isn't Nintendo, and if they are making non-family friendly games, they're using 2nd parties or 3rd parties under Nintendo's supervision. Titles like Geist and Eternal Darkness.

And, Miyamoto should not be, under any circumstances, allowed to make a game based on whatever crazy idea he had. The games where he is remembered, are all done on limited resources with a specific task in mind.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.
