Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii U is now 1 month old and has sold 1.8 million units. How is it doing?

How has the Wii U performed so far?

It's doing spectacular! I'm blown away! 126 10.09%

It's doing really good, can't complain. 418 33.47%

It's doing good, not as ... 269 21.54%

Could have been better... 176 14.09%

It's doing poorly; Wii did much better! 127 10.17%

Still can't believe they... 133 10.65%

Total:1,249

Well, I don't have a Wii U yet but the biggest attraction would be the games. And there are few games for the Wii U that I want. Right now it'd make more sense for me to buy a PS3 because there are games on it I currently want.

My take: The Wii U is selling as good as many other launches of supply constrained consoles and it can only be judged like for like compared to other consoles with a similar supply situation. We don't know for instance if Nintendo had say twice the supply of the Wii that it would have sold twice as much as the Wii U or if the Wii would have simply sold 5% more. All we know is the upper bounds on demand and not the demand compared to other consoles.

Tease.

Nintendo needs games. They need to win 3rd party support and over the years we've seen Nintendo slowly gain back support they've lost (Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, etc) but we need more. Imagine FF XV on Wii U! The next Metal Gear game. Nintendo needs to do some serious thinking because if they don't, PS3 and Xbox 360 are going to continue getting the games, and PS4 and Nextbox are going to continue where those left off. So its on Nintendo now. Its easier to knock down a tower than build it, but they better build fast cause its a short time frame, and games take 1 1/2 - 2 years to make.

I thought it would have a better start than the Wii, but fade off really quickly in Q1 2013. A big launch with poor numbers following shortly after for a while.

Expected NSMB to do launch wonders.
Thought supply wouldnt be a problem, while the Wii was sold out everywhere.
It had, or seemed to have, a healthy launch library.

Expected ~2.3 Million in a Month. In all honesty though, over 1.4M is still really good.

Same here. Although now I think Japan sales will stay high.

I already didn't feel good bout Nintendo Land but seeing the game in action via a first-time Let's-Play meant I would use it in a lecture on 'How Not To Design Games' very effectively. Every rule of good design is broken, quite apart from the actual appeal.

At this point Wii U fans are expecting exclusives and wanted first party titles to appear. I do not think they will - I think third party support is now dead, and Nintendo will do nothing people want except 3D Mario and 3D Zelda, but those will be far too late (say Q4 2014 and 2015 respectively) to revive it.

I only have one major issue.....

No system wide achievement system. Honestly it's a major buzz kill for me

Wow, to think we all used to play with no achievement systems before the 360... What neanderthals we all were. ;-P

Microsoft surely changed how games are played with the system. It's one of those things that once you do or see, it can't be unseen or it feels empty without it.

Trust me, I know were you're coming from.

I don't care how it sells or doesn't. I got mine and I really enjoy it.

Now only thing I care about is upcoming games for it and if any 3rd party games skips the Wii U... guess what, I still have my PS3 and X360.

Given that the Wii was sold out basically through 2007 and still relatively tough to find even in 2008, I would say its fair to assume that Nintendo perhaps could've sold double the Wii systems in 2006 that they had at launch.

I think it's off to a good start. Time will tell whether it will catch on or not. Will be an interesting console race this coming generation.

What rules did they break?

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

Cant lie i missed out on the launch so i was angry (didn't pre order in time), but now that its xmas time and they are coming back on the shelves im glad i didnt get one at least for now. I've been looking over the list of games and release dates; honestly the only games im interested in are new super mario u and rayman which isnt coming out till feb-mar 2013. Honestly i have a 360 and ps3 so the multi platform games will be on one of the two. My question is how many others that wanted the system at launch and missed out are going to feel the same way i do after getting over the new console high.
