Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii U Launch Sales for Japan (Console/Handheld Comparisons Inside!)

Good WiiU start there but the software is again pretty low.

Btw. is Nintendo Land bundled in Japan or not ?

PS4 should have a better launch than PS3 if Sony charges less than before (although they might charge $800... PS3 was $470 more than PS2 at launch) but there will be virtually no way to make a profit on titles for it in Japan. Will probably do worse than PS3 in the long term.

So what do we think about the WiiU thrashing the PS3 and 360 launch, I think it signals the continuing utter domination of Nintendo in Japan. Xbox will stay irrelevant next gen and ps4 will continue the drop we have seen from PS2 to PS3. Seems set to me.

Nintendo is in an interesting position here.

The Wii software is still selling at an impressive rate - 4 million WW and yet there are no 'new' releases.

The DS software is still selling at an impressive rate - 2.1 million WW and yet there are no 'new' releases except for Pokemon

The 3DS is now gaining rapid momentum and from here on forth, 3DS will likely dominate 2013 with the software planned (Monster Hunter 4, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, Pokemon, etc.)

The Wii U will most likely sell 3 million by year-end WW, however the future does not seem to bode well currently as there is hardly any software announcement for 2013. Will the Wii U Vita itself? I don't think so but there is a cloud of uncertainty that follows it for sure. In Japan however, there is no cloud of uncertainty as Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest are now 'technically' Nintendo exclusive games.

ah yes that's what I thought. Just like Wii Sports then.

If NSMBU were on the Vita, it would be the third best selling game behind Miku and Persona after just 2 days.

I think the low sell through for Mario is nothing to worry about because retailers know that they will sell those games over time for full price so it's better to have it in stock.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

I'm more interested in Paper Mario sales :(

(and 3DS and Vita's)

Nope; only the MH game is in limited bundles (similar to the ZombiU bundle). Their Premium pack comes with no game; hence the lower attach ratio. Which Japan always has, anwyay. I swear a fair few launches have seen attach ratios around or even below 1 in Japan in the past.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Vinnie, if you could also post other console/handheld launch #'s that would be really appreciated. ^_^

EDIT:

Here's partial numbers from Turkish's thread.

PS2: 630,552
GBA: 611,504
NDS: 441,485
Wii: 371,936
3DS: 371,326
PSV: 321,407

X360, PS3, Xbox, GameCube, and DreamCast first week sales would be nice to have as well.

I think nothing of  it.  I'm sure the combinaton of GCN+Xbox+PS2 > Wii+PS3+X360 > Wii U+PS4?+ 720?  which is just continuing the narrative that home consoles (and Japan as a whole) is becoming irrevelant.  Nintendo fans will cling to this region because itll be the only safe region for Nintendo this time around (expect large famitsu threads and little world wide ones).
