how many people who have actually played uncharted or gears do you see complaining about this issue?

...you're the first person i've seen

I played both, and I can tell you I wasn't liking the Gears visuals at all, it gave me an Uncanny Valley experience (it repulsed me). The style didn't do it for me. Uncharted on the other hand, loved the visuals.

The life in these "robots" is what solves the uncanny valley effect, and imho the style of themes like Gears and such don't do it for me, and I'd assume so for many others. For something to be organic, it needs to resonate with us. Clichés simply don't work.

it comes down to your opinion of the art style which in this case doesn't reflect what the vast majority are saying

beyond that as cgi said most hd games do not try to achieve photo realism, games out this year like halo 4, borderlands 2, dishonored etc and even upcoming games like for example, bioshock infinite,  god of war ascension, gears judgement etc all have a unique artstyle

so i can't agree with the point the op is trying to push because he seems to wrongly believe in general hd games strive to achieve realism

already happening to me. Dislike games that are "milestones" in this area. But it's with all games that tend to copy reality. Even if it's just objects, I feel it's not a game anymore and won't like it much.

then you're gonna love this ;)

That actually gives me a headache.

I updated the OP... check it out :P

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I'm not complainging about them, what I'm saying is that they're going for that photo realism and in the end, it might be the wrong way to go. Right now we can't make game characters look like humans, but we will be soon, and that might turn a lot of people off.

thats the point, you're wrong they are not trying to achieve photo realism, they both have unique art styles

imo it doesn't because you haven't posted examples from games but from general animation

post some examples from games instead

Ive got to be honest. The only people I really see saying photo realistic graphics are bad are mostly Nintendo fans.

Eventually we will have photo realism I assure you. That doesn't mean every game will try and do it though

All i wish is that more developers would move away from the "real is brown" camp.

Yeah, I always get caught by surprise when I walk outside and realise that real life isn't gritty grey and brown with specks of dirt blood across my field of vision. I can't see that I've observed jaggies on my peers either, nor do they glitch...

Seriously though, this cannot be repeated enough times. This is one of Far Cry 3's redeeming factors for me, the color palette and overall artistic style is great.

Well, for one he didn't say HD games, he said games that employ photorealism, and listed Uncharted, CoD, Battlefield.

His idea runs off the hypothesis that, though they have unique styles, they contain humanoids and that would inevitably lead to the uncanny valley dilemma. Not that I agree with him, as you can see from my posts I have a different PoV, but I think you're looking at it wrong.

Problem is that he just assumes that people who are making the biggest games in the industry don't understand this. Like they would just let their multi million franchises to their downfall without anyone on their team noticing that something seems off in their games.

the presense of humanoinds doesn't lead to the uncanny valley but how they are treated with respect to art direction is what may lead to the uncanny valley or avoid it

once developers continue to treat humanoids as they have with respect to art styles by giving characters unique art styles there will be no issue

there has been no evidence to suggest yet that devs will change their current strategy and try to do away with the unique art styles they give their game characters whether they be humanoid or not so i think the concern is unfounded
