I don't think so. It's over 5 million behind. That's a lot this late in the generation. Sales are slowing for all consoles, even if the PS3's drop-off is milder than the Wii's.
360 has the best chance at overtaking Wii in any market, as it gets close in the US now. PS3 could end up in the same ballpark in the EU, but it won't overtake it.

"In any market"?

I meant that the 360 in the USA market has the biggest chance of overtaking the Wii in any of the three main markets. In Japan it's a done deal, in Europe I think the Wii will hold on but the PS3 still has a chance, in the USA the XBox has a big chance to win and it likely will.

That part was a side-note anyway.

To Serious_frusting:

For the argument of Marathon and Sprint, I think every product manufacter expects their products are capable of selling with higher volumes in short times. It means their products are popular, well-known in the consumers. And the most importance is this will bring high revenue back to the manufacturers. To maintain the lead of the market share, the manufacters will then introduce new products to the market and get the same feedback from consumers.

In my opinion, when we talk about the winner of each generation, we are talking about the total sales within the golden age of the generation and their related revenues, profits and marekt performance, not the lifetime sales.

Do you really think MS and Sony are planning to have a Marathon, but not a Sprint to occupy the marekt share in short term?

To me, the golden age of this gen is 2007 to 2012. Before 2007, Wii and PS3 were not launched in all major markets. Next year, it is clear that PS3 and 360 will have the last year before PS4 and nextxbox comes to the market. So based on each year's shipment figure, the winnder of each year is:

2007~2010: Nintendo
2011: Microsoft
2012: Sony
2013: Highly possible Sony

So based on above facts, Wii is the clear winner of this gen whatever it will be surpassed by 360 or PS3 in 2014 or in 2015. The lifetime sales say nothing about their market performance in the golden age of the generation.

if PS3 goes to 150 euros in 2013... i expect 09-2013... the production price will for sure drop and Sony will want to keep PS3 in high sales after the PS4 announcement. that might make it surpass the wii before next gen starts...

almost everyone disagreed with me.

Why I didn't post in this thread? I remember something about this subject.

like eberyone else you probably dismissed it as madness! lol

I'm good at long term predictions... just crappy at short term ones.

Which is why I know that the people saying in my other recent thread that the PS3 will be flat in sales next year is close to lunacy.

I agree but I think PS3 will sell near 11 million next year yet.... down yoy of course.

Good call lad. I never would have got the 360 one because i dont really keep track of 360 vs Wii but i have thought for a long time that the PS3 would outpace the wii in Europe. I made a thread years ago about it and got laughed at.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

It's not about winning the most years, it's about getting the highest number overall. The lifetime sales tell us exactly which console sold the most, no questions asked. It's Nintendo's fault for not supporting their console and MS and Sony should benefit for their huge efforts lately to increase their sales.

axctually, its about making the most money.

Exactly what I wanted to say. It's about money. Nintendo made a lot cause Wii was profitable and required a hell lot of additional controlers. X360 was profitable cause people paid for Live like crazy (will never understand that...), X360 and PS3 also earn a lot of money through online sales, almost non-existant on Nintendo consoles. You would think that PS3 lost this by a huge margin... I don't think it's true! I think that in the calculations concerning the profitability of PS3 we have to include the fact, that it was the PS3 that established the Blu-Ray as a new standard. So all the money Sony gets from BR players and discs sold all around the world (and all the licences) should be atributed to the PS3. They wouldn't be making this money had it not been for the PS3.

This is why I think that this gen every company was a winner and we just can't point a single company that won. You can argue that Sony lost (it lost its position on the market), MS won (cause it became a real player on this market) and Nintendo won (cause it managed to return to the mainstream after more than 10 years), but all in all I think it was a draw. Everyone was fighting a bit different wars and everyone managed to win theirs. This leads us up to an extreemely interesting next gen!

And to the OP - I hope that PS3 manages to win Europe, just for the sake of marketing and getting equal. The only thing that can stop Sony from doing this is that new Canadian Wii. This can really sell if they put a crazy price on it, like 79 Euro, or so.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

but does it really make a difference considering Nintendo effectively killed of the Wii support?

Well for the history I thing that make a difference... in 2030 if a gamer look at the sales of the 7th generation will think the PS3 is the bigest winner.

in 2030?!:

there will be questions like this (new gamers of course):

what is a console ?

what is a sony? or a playstation?

what is a "biggest winner"?

:)

i can see a big potential with a 99€ console anytime which could sell years after the ps4 is released like with ps2 so yeah i can see ps3 "winning" in europe and even worldwide (wii obviously won the gen financially)  if wii sales will die even faster now with wii u (but not sure)
