You guys make it sound like gamecube was a failure. It was still very profitable for nintendo. And it won't be specifically nintendo attacking casuals next gen. Microsoft have proven they are making a heavy push for casuals. In fact they look to be pushing harder then nintendo currently are.

Yes, but they are doing what Sony did to increase the market of gaming. They increased the multimedia capabilities of the console, so casuals can have a device where they can do anything they want. I could've bought a Blu Ray player, but I didn't because I have a PS3 and when I need games for it I can play it. When I want streaming I've got that too and I've even ordered Pizza with my PS3 and saved my pictures. Microsoft did the same (except the Blu Ray) and the Kinect is becoming like a long time multimedia helper, but I think the Kinect 2 will take longer to gather the audience. Nintendo is late to the technological party, but if they are doing a gimmick that isnt a fad now the casuals wont take to it as well because they can use their Ipad for that. The Wii U is a love letter to the new Wii owners who stuck around to gaming with Nintendo again and the core Nintendo fanatics who have been the core for years. Of course Sony and Microsoft will be pushing harder than Nintendo, but again, that has created a stable larger marketshare for gaming.

it was not a good decision on nintendo's part to focus on core gamers at the expense of casuals. imo.

This. It's not one or the other... It's BOTH.

Wii Fit U is coming next year, I think the date is not yet set. But it's the type of thing that is purchased by adults and doesn't need to be sold at Christmas. I think Nintendo will push this and other adult-casual titles through the middile of next year. Something "brainy" or "artsy", something that can only be done using a tablet, something that can only be done one Wii U.

And of course Nintendo is already nailing the "Nintendo Casual" market with Super Mario Bros. People like to say that it's grandpas and soccer moms that bought the wii for wii sports. That's not really true, the big casuals that wii hit are true gamers, just not COD gamers. Lots of girls love the wii for Mario Bros and Mario Kart. Since Mario Bros is available day 1, the mass-market will love the system. I literally twice saw groups of girls in Gamestop recently squeeling over Wii U. Girls love Mario as much as the Twilight boys.

Yeah, Mario is one sexy plummer ;)

But it appears as if Nintendo is going after the Nintendo core this holiday, and in spring they're opening up for casuals with Wii Fit U, and by fall next year I expect them to role out the big guns for the hardcore whinnies...

Yup. I think the idea is Nintendo Core first, then casuals looking for something new in 2013, then launch some eye-popping software for fall 2013 that will make people choose the still-new Wii U over competing new systems that would probably be lacking a "killer-app" at launch.

So is it trolling because I think that their strategy will backfire or because I like their strategy? Or is it trolling to think that nintendo will be on third place next gen?

Flamebait and trolling. Posts or signatures slamming a particular platform without basis - be it a specific console, macs, windows, or anything similar - will not be tolerated. This applies to specific games as well as consoles.

  • You always have the right to express your opinion, as long as it is relevant to the thread topic, and you do so in a civil manner, justifying what you say. If you want to discuss something other than the thread topic, make your own thread.
  • The forums are here for gamers of all persuasions, so unless you're in a thread specifically geared towards platform comparison/discussion, keep your anti-platform comments out of the thread. Note that there is a difference between having a reasonable argument in the correct thread and trolling.
  • Similarly, do not create threads, posts or signatures just to bait people of a specific fan group. Bait threads will be locked and you will be moderated for them. If you spend a lot of time making hit-and-run negative threads or posts about a specific platform you will also be moderated at the discretion of the moderators.

You're welcome.
