The Xbox 360 has sold well beyond expected with only three exclusives. Has to say something about Pachters logic.

I think his logic is stuck in the old PS2 days where PS2 had many 3rd party exclusives. and helped to sell the console.

Which makes no sense anyway in Nintendo's case as they will always struggle to get real 3rd party support.

PS2 was also getting timed exclusives like GTA.

Yes, please, more exclusives - I think something like Shadows of the Hylians (or maybe Guardians of Zelda, if brand recognition is imperative), action-adventure-RPG, strictly concentrating on Sheikahs (and played as one), in familiar Zelda setting, but with darker tone (and more action and exploration and less puzzles), could be something that could potentially draw more "hardcore" PS360 audience - and even if not, it would enrich existing IPs.

Hey, I like this idea!! They should make that shit!!!

Hehe, thanks, I've been thinking about it for some time now, wondering what can make good new IP with gameplay and style similar to what is in demand on PS360 and in the same time having instant Nintendo brand recognition. Pretty much, answer came by itself - shadowy, combat, magic and stealth able characters that are heavily interweaved into Zelda lore, on which you can base a lot of future titles that complement Zelda games.

That's totally awesome! I hope some Nintendo employee sees this! And since they're not as powerful as Link they really need to sneak around. It's simply a perfect fit! They could make a game like this as a prequel to an up coming Zelda game, or release it afterwards when you might have encountered this character while running around as Link. It could be like two parallell stories!!

its like people didnt even read the article and just commented right away. i dislike patcher just like the next guy but he didnt say that nintendo's needs more exclusives IP's, he said that the WiiU needs more exclusives. it needs more of nintendo's exclusives to release. that's what he clearly said and he is 100% right. he wasnt talking about nintendo exclusives in general but the number of exclusive games on the WiiU

But that's such an obvious statement that Pachter must be really, really dumb to think that Nintendo WON'T release more games on the system... We all know that Mario Kart, 3D Mario and Zelda is coming. We'll have to wait and see if Donkey Kong and Metro will join the party eventually. And then we've got Monoliths and Retros new games....

Nintendo consoles NEVER runs short of exclusive games as long as Nintendo is willing to make them.

lool pachter isnt really really dumb, he is just dumb :P but he has a point, if you noticed he didnt say they werent coming, its not the matter of "if" its the matter of "when". he says he is very pessimistic that they will be able to deliver them next year. and he has a point. WiiU is now competing with current (or for nintendo last gen) hardware. if they cant make exclusives to differentiate them selfs then they will have trouble. why buy a wiiU when the same games are being released on your 360 or ps3? why just not save up money and buy the PS4 or nextbox? the nextbox and ps4 will come by next year or atleast one of them and provide next gen quality graphics and capabilites. if by then nintendo doesnt differentiate them selfs from the ps3 and 360, there gonna be in a lot of trouble and in danger of people over looking it and focus on ps4 and 360

Yes, I agree that they need to show of something that blows the current gen consoles away, but that's not to say they ain't got exclusives... I reckon we'll either be hearing about Retro's new game, and/or Monoliths new project and/or Miyamoto's new IP, and perhaps Platinum games will be ready to show some footage from Bayo2 in the spring... That's potentially 4 games that could look awesome.

I can see two of these four being released this time next year in an attempt to scupper the launches of the PS4 and 720 (in order of likelihood imo):

Mario Kart U
Retro's new game
3D Mario
Monolith Soft's new game

Nintendo really don't have to worry about first and second party exclusives because they've got the strongest valued and the most amount of IPs in the business. Along with those above they've got Kirby, Pikmin, Metroid, Zelda, Battalion Wars, F-Zero, Wave Race, Donkey Kong, Smash Bros., WarioWare, Luigi's Mansion and Ice Climbers. And that's just off the top of my head, I've probably missed loads.

I think Pachter was talking about third party exclusives, and we'll see plenty of those too...especially if Nintendo continue to do publishing deals with third party developers like they're doing with Bayonetta 2.

And the U eShop will be the go-to place for indie developers considering that developers get tens of thousands of pounds worth of middleware free with each dev kit and that Nintendo are apparently taking much less of a cut from eShop purchases compared to Live and PSN.

Good times ahead methinks.

I think the Nintendo exclusives next year is a given. I honetly can`t see Nintendo not releasing a few of them next year, specially seeing how they slowed down Wii development in it`s final years.
What i do expect is for Nintendo to take the route that it has been taking: only show what`s coming out in 3-6 months. I doubt Nintendo will show games that won`t be released for another year.

I kind of agree that the U will struggle to compete in the core market unless Nintendo does something to compete in that market, more than getting multi-plats. They needs games like ZombiU, that's a good start.

I believe 3rd party exclusives will be the key, not 1st party exclusives, as Nintendo's 1st party exclusives generally don't appeal to the PS360 core crowd. They need to steal exclusives much like Microsoft has done in the past, in order to win marketshare. If they do that early enough, they have a good chance at snagging a considerable portion of that martket for at least half the gen, until the two other consoles quickly outpace the U HW-wise (through optimization and dev knowledge growth).

Though Pachter's idea is right, his solution is all wrong and his pessimism very misplaced.

Pachter is also down on Nintendo's capabilities with online functionality, too. "In particular, it is essential that the Wii U has the same online multiplayer functionality as the others, or they will have trouble attracting Call of Duty players, for example."

...

to this point in particular i don't think the same is good enough.  it needs to be better.  i mean, this is a moving target afterall.  it's not like live and psn aren't getting better each year and are likely to see significant improvements with the launch of their respective next gen offerings.

Why are so many people skipping over the "next year" part of his statement? Yes, we know Nintendo will trot out the usual suspects eventually, but what is 2013 looking like? Will Nintendo be able to convince PS3/360 owners who are on the fence? I see nothing wrong with that he's saying. I don't know enough about Nintendo's release schedule to agree or not, but I can't fault his logic on this.

Also, as someone who was once a Nintendo fan, I do think they should look into diversifying their exclusives. Bayonetta is a start but I'll be interested in seeing if it's a trend or an anomaly.

thanks for pointing out the obvious....

You agree with him that Nintendo 1st party exclusives will attract the PS360 crowd? honestly?
