Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Will the Xbox 720 be able to do 4K HD?

Well as far as we know, next Xbox will be the most powerful. If any console has a shot, its Xbox.

Unlikely as well. Next Xbox will be bundled with Kinect 2.0. That alone will bring up the price by about $100.

Sony's financial situation has nothing to do with how powerful the PS4 will end up being if that's your reasoning. Sony isn't one to build a weak console if Vita is any indication.

The only 4K ability the next generation of consoles will have is upscaling. But considering that all 4k (QuadHD) TVs will have upscaling hardware built in, it's really an unnecessary additional expense. It doesn't help anyone that won't own a 4K display, and offers a redundant feature for those that will.  Regardless, I foresee the next Xbox having a 4K output option just like the 360 can output at all lower resolutions.  If they did that, I wouldn't mind seeing other resolutions in between HD and 4K (1600p, in the least).  That would benefit people with super hi-res PC monitors and be more interesting to that crowd.

I do, however, have zero problems with a native resolution higher than 1080p for a few years down the road when 4K technology is affordable. This may only apply to sidescrollers (e.g. Rayman Origins/Legends) and a select few others. But seeing as console generations are getting longer and longer, this will only be a good thing for the longevity of the hardware. If the next Xbox or Playstation go 10 years before their successor, then 4K will be big on the market less than half way through their lifecycle.

Even if some games' native resolutions are higher than HD, yet lower than 4K, it's still a huge advantage over the competition that is currently using native 720p for most games. I can't imagine something so powerful would be very affordable, but maybe Microsoft can do it. We'll just have to wait and see.

No way it will be able to do 4k ...

Keep in mind that consoles are always weaker than pc... They are like low-mid range pc's... And if nowwadays even high end pc's can't display 4k resolution properly, how will a console do that?!

Another question: do we really need 4k resolution? Doesn't it still need time for us to fully experience fullHD? Before 2005 we were fine with regular tv's..and that over 50 years...so don't come along and pretend that its time to move forward ...its not!
Even now, at the end of 2012, not everybody has HD capable tv's...but besides that:

I don't see any benefits for consoles with 4k over 'regualr consoles with 'just' HD...they better bring something innovativ to the table...for higher resolution just use a damn pc

I just found this, it is coming

A lot more expensive then 1080p in 2005, but the flagship models are the first step. Consumer models to follow in 2014 maybe 2015.

thats wrong.  you can get them now.  Harrods have two on display.  £25k.

Yes they have been on sale for a while but only at specialized or high end stores. This is the first time I see some buzz at your every day best buy kind of store.

Or people are getting fed up with the resolution nonsense. And want it to stop. There's a point where it becomes pointless. 8 channels of audio. 7.1 was already ridicules in your house setup. 4k-8k. When you need to be super far away to properly view it. 32 inch TV's are the general public norm. and that doesn't even help out 2k. The constant problem in properly releasing shows on blu-ray. PS4 and XBOX whatever won't do 4k. Next gen will.

32" is not the norm here. When I walk the dog at night I see big screens in most of the houses I walk by. It's a pretty mixed neighbourhood, vastly different sized houses, tvs are all big. 32" definitely won't be the norm 5 years from now.

Games won't do 4K, apart from maybe a few arcade titles. Nothing wrong with the console having the option for images and video content. Why not support the higher res monitors that are already out and affordable. There is more between 1080 and 2160.
And 1 good thing of 4K output is that 720p and 1080p both scale up to 4K without introducing any scaling softness.

Same here I'd say 42" is the norm. Probably even more than that.

And what better way then to experience fullHD (1080p) on a 4K screen

Upscaling DVD to 1080p had people claiming it looked almost as good as blu-ray. So blu-ray upscaled to 4K should look pretty damn good too.

Before 2005 plenty of people were not fine with regular tvs. However large size projection screens looked like crap and CRT tvs weighed a ton. There just wasn't an affordable alternative to bulky projecters with line doublers and Muse hi-vision Laserdisc.
Now we have the tech and computing power to move forward.

Consoles are multimedia devices nowadays that are supposed to last for 7 to 10 years. Why not be prepared for 4K so you can display images, video and internet browser when the tvs become affordable. And maybe some 4K arcade games to get people excited for the next round of consoles in 2020-2022.

I'm sure it will output video at 4k and upscale games, but I don't think any games will be native 4k except simple side scrolling shooters.

I don't really see the point of buying a 4k TV. I can't even tell the difference between 720p and 1080p movies ona 50inch screen. I expect a 50inch 4k would look the same. I suppose if you bought some kind of giant screen you'd need a higher res, but I doubt you'd be able to tell it looks better unless you were sitting to close.

I couldn't have said it better myself, D-Joe.  Well said.

I don't understand anyone's fascination with next-gen MSony doing 4K for movies or anything else. Your TV won't do it and those that come to market that can won't be big sellers for a few years. The major shift to HD TVs is now over. People have moved and now TVs are not a primary seller in the market. This will be about as ineffective as 3D.

It makes zero sense to care or even invest in such a pointless endeavor at this point.
