It has only been one guy who said that and he got his thread shredded to pieces No it is not failing and it has 40 million gold subscribers. It is a billion dollar service so no it is not failing.

40 million?  That's nearly the size of the 360 installed base.  Are you sure about that?  It would mean that an overwhelming majority of 360s out there are linked to a gold account.  I have trouble believing that.  Isn't gold actually unavaliable in some regions?

You cant prove that. But based on software trends this year alone, the PS3 install base is even lower....

Software trends?  The PS3 passed the 360 installed base quite awhile ago and that gap can only have grown with the sales gap the PS3 holds for this year.  I'm not sure what you mean otherwise.  I doubt that anyone would dispute that the 360 is in last place in terms of installed base, though the difference between it in the PS3 probably isn't very much.

As for proving the size of the 360 installed base, you're right, I don't see any current numbers and I didn't realize the previous numbers were that old.  All I can say is that the estimated installed base for the 360 was at 44M at the start of 2011.  I have no idea how to apply failure rates for the 360 since they vary greatly by model and calculating unattached consoles is even further beyond me.  If I had to guess, I'd say the 360 installed base now would probably be around 55-60M.

You cant prove actual install bases. Software trends are the only way we can tell how many active gamers there are for both consoles. After COD and Halo 4 sales legs kick in, 360 would have sold more software this year then PS3. Sooooo if PS3 has a higher instal base.....weird how they are buying less games then 360 users.

Look, honestly, I don't want to get into your "my console is better than your console" grade-school, back-and-forth arguments.  Yes, actual numbers are only estimates that depend on some kind of mathematical model, but simple logic will tell us that there are more working PS3s in the wild than 360s.  I see no reason for you to be offended by that or for you to try to turn that into something else just so you can feel your console of choice is superior.  We already know that the rest of the world buys less games than North Americans.  We already know that the world's best selling franchise, CoD, sells much better on the 360 than the PS3.  We already know that Sony has no franchise released in 2012 that can compete with Halo 4 in terms of units sold.  This is all logic.  I really, honestly don't care if any of that offends you or makes you want to leap for joy.  It is what it is, deal with it either way.

So were counting Bluray PS3s with 0 intention of playing games? Because thats really what PS3 was sold as in its early years.

So guess PS3 has a higher install base, but 360 has a higher gamer install base, judging by software trends. I think thats a nice compromise.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

article back in jan 2012

One of Microsoft's undoubted successes in consumer electronics, the Kinect allows users to play games and manipulate their televisions solely through gestures and voice commands. It was launched in November 2010.

Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, delivering the opening keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, said there are now more than 66 million Xbox units in use and more than 40 million subscribers to its Xbox Live service, which offers more real-time, interactive entertainment.

Microsoft's last tally for Xbox and Kinect sales, from about six weeks ago, were about 59 million and 11 million, respectively, suggesting Microsoft sold about 7 million Xbox and Kinect units over the crucial holiday shopping season.

To be honest I haven't played much xbox 360 since Dragon's Dogma and right now catching up on wii games I've missed since the last 6 years...

Well if they have only 1 million subscribers (I'm sure there's more, but to make the math easier...) they make around 60 million dollars a year on it. Hard to imagine that kind of money is made by something that is failing. Everyone I know plays Halo and COD's on Live.

Everyone who has ever argued the cost of an xbox knows that every xbox owner gets a year subscription for 20$. It's a proven fact.

Can I have that please?

1. There are about 40 million xbox live users, about 15-20 million are Gold members. Look it up.

2. There might be more psn users, but there is no way there are more PS+ users then gold members.

3. Anyone can make a PSN account, hell I even have a PSN account, and I don't even have a Ps3...so ya.

4. Is Xbox live Dying? Hell no.

The number of gold sbuscriptions is about 50 - 60 % as far as we know and the 40 million number is 10 months old already. You can bet MS sold one or two subscriptions with Halo 4, Forza Horizon and Call of Duty, which are very multiplayer focused games.

So 25 million gold members is more likely. That means MS makes 1.2 billion USD (!!!) per year (!!!!!!!) just with the fees and revenue due to DLC exceeds this number.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

I would really like to post in this thread and clear up some facts, but if I do I'll get drawn in and end up with a headache as there's way too much misinformation here to put right.

Xbox Live has at least 40 million gold subscribers.

I'll leave it at that.

LOL @ Bold. No way. Where did this number come from?

OT: No, Xbox Live is not dying, but it is falling behind in some areas. Sony started doing Day 1 Digital Downloads for some games, Microsoft hasn't. Nintendo does it for every single game with Wii U. And then there's Playstation Plus. The value there is amazing.

Steve Ballmer and Majornelson.

PS+ has roughly 5 million users and has had no effect on XBL.  I know a lot of people has been hyping it up on this site but the majority of people see no need in owning PS+.

Don't arrogantly say things you know nothing about.

I would love for you to give a source, until then I wont' believe you.

I HIGHLY doubt PS+ has 5million users too. Where are you getting this number from?

@bold
I can say the same to you. You're the one that seems to be making stuff up.

http://www.tgdaily.com/games-and-entertainment-brief/60687-xbox-live-users-topple-40-million

One of many articles that you can find by simply typing it into google.....Lazy people

"Ballmer said that of those 66 million Xbox 360 consoles, there are 40 million users who have signed up for an online Xbox Live account. That's a pretty good connectivity rate.

Of course, in order to do simple things like play online games andstream Netflix videos, users need to pay for a premium Xbox Live Gold membership. Ballmer did not say how many active Gold members there are."

VGKing give it up, PSN maybe dying especially after the whole hacking catastrophe. I prefer a quality online gaming service, you get what you pay for. Xbox Live is only getting bigger by the day. Xbox Live just had a record breaking week with the launch of Halo 4. So makes you think they're dying? There are around 40 million subscribers on Xbox Live, that's nothing to scoff at. Sega paved the way for online gaming with the Dreamcast remember? Not too long ago there was literally a handful of players gaming online back in 2000, now the online gaming community is huge.
