The number of gold sbuscriptions is about 50 - 60 % as far as we know and the 40 million number is 10 months old already. You can bet MS sold one or two subscriptions with Halo 4, Forza Horizon and Call of Duty, which are very multiplayer focused games.

So 25 million gold members is more likely. That means MS makes 1.2 billion USD (!!!) per year (!!!!!!!) just with the fees and revenue due to DLC exceeds this number.
