Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nielson says Nintendo am not doomed. But entire video game industry is.

I think that those charts are extremely hindered by statistical bias. It doesn't look very accurate.

What the heck is apple tv :/

It is not the ever-rumoured television set that Apple is said to be making as famously revealed in Steve Jobs's biography :).

Apple TV is a $99 set-top box that is primarily for streaming: YouTube, Netflix, iTunes movies, etc.  Sales are puny in comparison to iPhones, iPads, even Macs. However, one key feature is streaming video or games from an iDevice to the TV. This turns the iPad/iPhone into an ersatz console (some apps specifically target this usage case so that the iPad becomes a controller rather than a screen). Probably it is this feature that explains why AppleTV sales have been rising steadily year after year, now at 5 million units/year.

First you tell us your fetishes are your own business, then you shove them in our faces.

Hey, that's another one of my fetishes. How'd you know that?

Because I've seen Hatmoza's wall.

Oh, then you know what a Flower fan he is!

So you have a pansy fetish too.

People will want tablets more than dedicated gaming devices. People will want phones more than dedicated gaming devices. People will want food and shelter more than dedicated gaming devices. People will want clothes and toilet paper before they want dedicated gaming devices.

But does this really spell doom for the video game industry? Contrarily, I don't see the relevance at all.

Besides, if anything, the smartphone/tablet markets are reaching out into new consumer bases and growing the video game industry.

(That's not to mention that of course no one wants a PS3 or Xbox 360 anymore, they've been out for years!)

The two most unsuccessful items overall are MS Surface and Apple TV, even PSVita and the old DS and PSP beat them easily.

But maybe MS should be glad, the market is saving it from possibly self killing its near monopoly on PCs...

Thanks for these great charts, Chandler.

I worry the results might not be wholly accurate, though, only because the Nielsen methodology is flawed. Although it has gotten better. In any event, I think the argument that the video game industry is doomed is way off. Video games have never been bigger or more commonly accepted as a mainstream medium.

If people keep playing video games on the ipad like man bear pig then the video game industry is surely doomed.

Where do they do these surveys? Wii U advertisements barely started, I don't see how kids could know about it so quickly. Or maybe I'm wrong? Maybe kids these days hang out on gaming websites...

A biased mind will only see their side and is blinded to anything else but their own interest.. so yes its just you man.
