Forums - Gaming Discussion - Who is to blame for the Casualization of Gaming?

We are. Consumers buy this stuff. If we didn't have an appetite for it, no one would make casual-friendly games.

Games that sell too much.

i'm to blame, sorry

i love gaming, but i'm just not very good at it, so for a long time i played the only games that didn't require lightning fast reflexes, RPG's and Point & Click Adventures

but the game industry felt sorry for me, so they made sure this generation i could play all these other games too, so they dumbed them down for me so i wouldn't get frustrated by playing a game i bought, because heaven forbid i would have bad memories of it and wouldn't buy the sequel!

i'm pretty happy that way, but i realize it caused many heartships for the serious core gamers

true story

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Gamers are to blame because they buy them.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

I see the "casualization" of gaming as something natural in an age where developers are constantly trying to reach broader audiences with their games.

The reason gaming was more hardcore focused in the past, is because they were made to appeal only to people already familiar with video games. Gamers were considered a niche audience in the past.

There was no need for long and useless tutorials like we have today. Since everybody knew how to do things.

The idea of making games that appeal to everyone is what is ruining games for me.

There just giving the people what they want. Games cost millions of dollars to make these days, why would they take the risk of making something like that. When it all comes down to it,you could blame the consumer's,because that's who buy the games in the first place.

Sony and Microsoft for making consoles that are too expensive to develop software for.

Creating titles without mass appeal is simply too risky these days.

I think you hit the nail on the ahead, it is next to impossible to make money without "casualising" the game, or else the game just won't make any money at all

The porn industry, in some way and form they are the main cause.
