Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Ubisoft fully support WiiU, but isn't happy with the high console price

So, is graphics capability (for which the Wii U's potential remains to be seen) is the barometer for price?  I mean, the Wii was kind of on par with the Gamecube, Xbox, and PS2 but the price for the Wii was $250 while the Gamecube was sub $99.  The last gen consoles had massive libraries, too.

Well, yeah if your competition is offering great games and similar HW capabilities, can you legitimately offer at a higher price? There must be something else, and we both know it's the padlet.

EDIT: Whoa, I really didn't adress your counterpoint, my bad. I'm getting really bad at this forum thing it seems, so sorry.

Okay, well the thing is that the PS2 and the Xbox were at the end of their runs, whereas the 360 and the PS2 are very well alive in terms of their selling curve (still on the upswing) and marketing, as well as their upcoming 1st and 3rd party game schedule. It wasn't the same when the Wii came out (1 year after the 360 released). Also, the Wii had a real value-add that made graphics not matter as much. I can't say it's the same case for the U, which is competing on much more traditional grounds.

All in all the U's padlet is the only thing that warrants a price, and it isn't a proven recipe for a home console. I think 300 is a lot to ask, and I personally will wait until 3D Mario, Zelda and Prime before I own it. I can wait. We'll see how other consumers react to it. It may very well be front-loaded with little legs.

So,, Nintendo prices the thing at 300-350, then it's clearly too expensive.. And sony priced the ps3 at 600, well it's just fine..

Ehh ,, lol..?

So im guessing that Sony had no ill effects from the $600 console right?

I expected Nintendo to release this at $200-250 and take an even bigger loss on each system sold... Seriously, I don't see how some of these people even have jobs in the video game industry. A bunch of old farts that have as good of decision making skills as the U.S. Congress.

Here is a point I totally missed earlier.

Isn't it software that is meant to sell more hardware? Which in turn will lead to more sales of your other games.

Therefore shouldn't we be expecting from the UBISOFT CEO an annoucement saying we are releasing more AAA killer app game? i.e Far Cry 3

As someone mentioned earlier I hope he is consistent in the future when and if the next MS and Sony console cost significantly more than the wii u.

I can only hope he is misunderstood and probably meant nintendo should have release a cheaper console in terms of hardware.

The gamepad alone ads significantly to the cost. I don't see how he can look at the system and say it's too expensive considering what went before and what is very likely to come in a year or two from the others.

I remember in 2006 people were thinking Wii should be higher price because of how quickly it sold out and then people on eBay etc were price gouging customers. Nintendo is selling their machine at a loss just to provide a price point that they think will hold for a while. I think that is fair to all the early adopter consumers who will make it up to Nintendo by buying more game software while late adopters will come in on same initial cost but hopefully Nintendo applies economies of scale and reduces the cost of producing their product to point where it is no longer selling at loss.

Really the only problem I see for Wii U is not knowing whats in the pipeline beyond this very well stacked launch software support.

"We're just in a transition year where the Wii will be replaced by Wii U," says Guillemot "There's an inflection point that will happen this year where Nintendo will sell more and more machines. We know hardcore people buy all the machines, but there will be lots of casual gamers buying the machines as well. I think it will not make all of the gap [from Wii sales], but it will start to narrow it."

Oh snap. All you fanboys who don't own all the systems are casual gamers. Ubisoft just dropped the bomb on all y'all.

^^ I knew I was a casualz.

"I always prefer lower pricing, so I can't say I'm happy,"

And I always prefer free, but *sings* you can't always get what you waaant!

Only third party companies that fully support the Wii U are allowed to make demands. Currently no third party qualifies, so the only right they have is to shut up, because everything they'll say will be used against them.

How does Ubi not qualify, be fair.

What are your expectations of them anyways? What have they done in the past at console launch that they are not doing here?
