Forums - Nintendo - Reggie, XSEED: Xenoblade, Last Story sold very well, Reggie talks Monolith Soft Wii U Project

Some numbers had been nice, but this is better than nothing. I'm surprised to hear XSEED being this positive about Last Story. It really didn't sell that much according to NPD, but perhaps they didn't need much to break even.

It’s Time For Japanese Developers To Stop Hoarding Their RPGs

If you're wondering why Japanese game publishers and developers have been so reluctant to localize their RPGs, the answer is easy. They think it's too much of a risk. They look at games that have failed to take off in the U.S.—RPGs like Brave Story and Half-Minute Hero and quite a few others—and decide it's not worth the time, money, and shame involved in localizing their games for an audience that doesn't seem to want them.

Well that's about expectations and straight economics is it not? If localisation requires (say) 100K sales to be a profitable venture then that should be the basis for whether or not to do it. Looking for blockbuster sales for JRPGs in the West is crazy because only a few JRPG franchises are ever going to be million sellers in the West. But that's not a reason not to do it. The more JRPGs that are localised the bigger you can grow that niche market.

And it's Sega's own stupid fault with VC3. If the franchise had stayed on PS3 it would have sold waaaay better than on dumb old PSP, and VC2 and 3 would have been a lot cheaper to make given the game engine was already there and didn't need any improvement. Localisation would have been a no-brainer.

hopefully this means that devs consider releasing more JRPG's to the west..all those buyers during the so called golden age of RPG's are still alive and kicking...have faith with your fanbase

I am glad I bought xenoblade and The last story on day 1 full price. Of course my first intention was to play and have fun with those amazing games, but also I wanted to support Xseed and nintendo and show them that there is a big market for those games. I am glad many other people did the same too.

Xenoblade was a very very good game. I really enjoyed and I hope they make this new game at least as good.

Good to hear. Their sales are actually solid for JRPGs and new IPs in this day and age, not to mention being on a console on the verge of replacement.

They deserved to do better, but it could have been worse. (Pandora's Tower)

I have been a fan of JRPGs for as long as I could remember. When I played Xenoblade, that same magic from the 90s came back, and it felt so great. This coming gen I hope developers give the western market more of a chance, because there is still lots of buyers here.

Estelle and Adol... best characters ever! XD

Reggie is an idiot. I wish Nintendo had someone more visionary and understanding of US game market running NoA like Nintendo has Iwata running NoJ.

The same goes for Europe. On 3DS Europe is actually treated worse, with a few important retail games still TBA (Code of Princess and Etrian Odyssey IV) and a lot of DD games exclusive to japan and USA. And 3DS is region-locked too!

Why this? It has not been pirated and no one really tried "looking for the right userbase", with only big mainstream games arriving in the west. Nintendo too is giving Japan an enormous and unjustifiable advantage: look at Animal Crossing, the last one was launched pratically at the same time WW, while this one wasn't even mentioned in the last Nintendo Direct as a game for H1 2013.

It looks like 90s all aver again.

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)
