Forums - Nintendo Discussion - So I'm pretty much never downloading games from Nintendo again

So if the rumours are to be believed, Wii U downloads of all kinds will be tied to hardware, just as there's apparently no way to download DSiWare games you've already bought to your new 3DS. When your hardare goes, so do your games. This stinks.

I have over 60 downloaded WiiWare and VC games on my Wii, and they'll all get left behind if I get a new Wii U (in contrast, the retail Wii games I have will all work with the new system, even if I bought them used for $10). I'm a pretty big proponent of digital distribution in general, but I just can't participate any further in the way Nintendo organizes their system. Not when many of the best WiiWare games show up later on iOS for less money and without being tied to hardware.

There are so many successful digital distribution models now that it's hard to believe a company like Nintendo can get it so wrong. Retail's days are numbered and Nintendo have shackled themselves to it. Leaving paid, licensed content behind on old hardware is the wrong way to do it, and I'm not buying another downloadable game from Nintendo until they get their act together.

We know almost next to nothing of their new Nintendo Network.

I'll wait until E3 before we start throwing hate and doom all over the place.

And well rumors be rumors.

You never know. Nintendo might do something where you can transfer your games from the Wii to the Wii U...

Hah! What am I talking about? You're correct, you most likely won't get your games.

EDIT: Contact Nintendo about it, see what they think of the situation.

There's still a chance that you can transfer your games from your Wii to a WiiU unit.

But I agree that Nintendo's model is heavily flawed. They HAVE to build up an account-based system as soon as possible.

Need something off Play-Asia? http://www.play-asia.com/

Wasnt there an option for Dsi to 3ds content?
They will do something similar, but will probabbly be a TOTAL transfer.

Around the Network

They likely can do something as the dsi and 3ds to transfer software from one unit to an other. But sure they'll betterhave to do an account base tied software with their nintendo network

But we must first concentrate ourselves on the way to entertain people, for video games to live. Else, it's a world where sales representative will win, which has as effect to kill creativity. I want to say to the creators all around the world:"Courage, Dare!". Shigeru Miyamoto.

3DS -> 3DS is also possible.

I'm pretty confident that Wii -> Wii-U transfers will be equally possible. But it's been confirmed that purchases will still be tied to your system rather than some account, just like they are on the Wii, DSi, and 3DS.

I hadn't heard about this. I don't actually have a DSi, but this is heartening. I just remember that at launch, there was no way to transfer.

If they implement a similar process for the Wii, I'd consider that acceptable. Not as nice as other systems which allow multiple devices to use the same license, but it's good enough.

And you know about the WiiU?

Wait and see please. Then react any way you want, but wait till a certain information comes.

As stated by others above it seems the issue of transferring games from system to system looks likely to be something nintendo is addressing. I'm pretty sure they know it would piss off potential wii u buyers so at a guess it's something they will fix before the wii u is released. Last thing they want is an uproar on their hands (screaming parents 'my brat d/loaded 50 games he can't use anymore so now he's locked himself in his room and hasn't eaten for 3 weeks! Screw you nintendo' blahblahblah
