I think PC gaming = crappy indie games. I doubt PC will overtake the console market for gaming any time soon. I'm almost sure more software will be sold for PC eventually, but i doubt it will be used as much as a dedicated game console.

If you add PC boxed and digital it's almost = to consoles add MMOs and it's higher include web and social it's far higher...

And that is the USA

Social network and website "games" aren't exactly games, its more like a way to burn time at work. Not surprised by the retail and digital PC sales, but regardless the mainstream popularity of core gaming is in the console market.

umm even discounting social and web games PC boxed + Digital + MMO is far larger than all consoles combined in terms of play time (the graph doesn't show sales)...

So even in terms of "core" games PC gets more play time, just admit you were wrong and move on

You have to remember that a large portion of digital sales aren't counted.
For instance I don't recall Blizzard telling us the numbers for digital downloads and Steam I think only tells us profits, not total sales.

But Historically before the PS1 burst onto the scene the PC always dominated sales by a massive margin.
The PS1 closed that gap and one would assume the PS2 helped push the consoles over.

You also need to take into account that profits on the PC are also actually higher as you don't need to pay royalties to Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo to release the game on that platform.

Plus on a console once a game is released it usually falls back into obscurity, never to hit the best sellers list again.
Yet if you take a look at Steam... A company can re-release a decade or two old game, have it hit the top of the charts and sell like hotcakes again with very little time or effort or money spent. - That just never happens on a console.

Allot of developers have been surprised at their PC releases selling rather well of late, the PC as a platform is still going strong and better yet a large percentage of people actually do have respectable PC's to run them.

Will the PC out-sell the consoles in terms of games? It probably already is.

I never admit I'm wrong, I just get loud and stupid until the other person gives up.

The 360 is basically a streamlined PC, the Wii U seems determined to have as much of a PC-like architecture as it can, nearly all the major PC developers are now making their PC games on the HD consoles, and this trend will probably continue with the Nextbox and PS4.

Looks to me like PC gaming has basically become the home console.

@Zarx -

Does your charts include the variety of games play between console and PC?

I'm willing to guess that the lion's share of game hours spent on PC is mostly on Valve and Blizzard games.

I'm thinking there are more variety of game companies sharing the market pie on consoles than on PC.

In my home region, No one has even heard of games like Witcher 2.

No but considering that there is more games on PC than any other platform I doubt that, for example on Steam at the moment Skyrim is up top, Battlefeild 3 is pretty big, league of legends is huge so is the old republic, the sims is one of the biggest selling franchises of all time, Civ 5 and terreria are both almost always in the top games on steam, Minecraft is a phenomenon etc etc

On the other hand it would be easy to say that console gamers only play Nintendo games and COD... I mean those are the games that always top the sales charts right?

And I am not surprised that not a lot of non PC gamers have heard about The Witcher 2 it's a niche exclusive game with a virtually nonexistent marketing budget.

I certainly hope not. The PC, in my opinion, is good for flash games and a few "actual" games here and there. Not console gaming.

won't happen.
the original xbox took the last major PC bastion from it ( shooters)
PC will have RTS's and MMOs now.. but everything else is better or the same on console.
soon, not next gen but the one after, we could easily have eye sensing technology which means RTS commands could be done with nothing but eye movements and voice ( and be useable not like End war)
MMOs work on console now, but its too clunky to talk since you can't have everyone talking in voice, and typing with console is a pain.

=D

yea I would like to see someone matching this kind of APM on a touch screen that you have to hold with at least one hand never mind the mouse precision

that isn't even that extream

You feel threatened by the fact that there is finally a controller can do MMOs and RTS games on consoles well?

I know some PC gamers feel those genres belong to them.

No I am debating just how well it will work because when you have a game wher high level play requires 100+ actions per minute including hotkeys, selection groups and precision selection and targeting. I just don't see how anyone could possibly think that a small screen tablet that you have to use a stylus for and hold with one hand is goind to be as good as M&K. It's almost like you haven't played a real RTS before or something. Sure it is 100x better than a gamepad but that still leaves K&M as 10x better.

I am pretty sure we have had this debate before

I've played RTS games before. It is not a requirement to be pressing 100+ actions per minute. Maybe you are talking about some subset of hardcore RTS gamers who play competitively or something.

An RTS that is built up  (Pikmin 3 for example) or properly ported to take advantage of the controller's features would play awesomely.

Sure PC will still have it's advantages with all those keys and stuff but I think the controller has  some unique possibilities  in its' own right such as, say, a game where you play with an RTS view on the controller and build up an empire, gather resources, etc while on the TV screen you can battle/explore in full third person view.
