I watched all of Canaan and the first season of Index. I'll wait season 2 eventually, there's just tons of stuff out there that's better.

Not really, Nisemonogatari is the sequel to Bakemonogatari if you have watched and liked it you will probably like Nisemonogatari too^^ other than that "Another" looks pretty good but I haven't seen the first episode yet, also I am used to watching whatever Mazuisubs releases so I am going to watch whatever they make (Kill me Baby), which is not very promising to me... but who knows...

I was going to ask if Afro Samurai was an anime but I believe that was answered right away in the op. I don't believe I ever saw this until a few days back at a friends. Watched it on Netflix instant stream and I am going to add it to my instant queue now.

I was wondering what makes a cartoon an anime? I could look it up on wiki but I assume one of you could easily answer my question.  I always just viewd anime as Japanese cartoons but I assume there is some difference between an anime and cartoon?

Basically you are right, Anime and Cartoons are both animated films/series, the difference is pretty much the production country, where I live Cartoon is pretty much a synonym for American produced animated series, and Anime for a Japanese animated film/series...

If you tell someone you are watching Anime they think you are a pervert and if you tell someone you are watching Cartoons they think you are a kid...

Sometimes you can tell apart a Cartoon and a Anime simply by the art style and sometimes art style gets adapted...
