No, that's just the route they have to take now.
Exactly like with the whole 'Oh we want Move to appeal to REAL gamers' blah blah blah. Because they had no other choice. Their whole strategy makes them appear to like gamers, but all the big 3 are the same, if Sony could have swapped with Nintendo at the height of the Wii they would have in a heartbeat.
X360 will overtake the Playstation 2 in the U.S - 12,371,000 to go!
Kinect - 16,280,000 / 25,000,000 - 8,720,000 to go!
X360 to become the best selling home console in the UK
2,485,000 / 765,000 to go!

Sony cares about taking over your living room, as does Microsoft. Nintendo on the other hand cares about their gamers half the time, when it comes to home consoles.

"People will get a second job to buy a PS3"
They care about your money just the same as Microsoft and Nintendo

Nope, thanks to the growing technology and the road which Nintendo has made with wireless motion controls, their gonna want to target more than just "hardcore" gamers.
Overall, in truth they care about the money rather than the enjoyment and satisfaction of the average gamer.

Wouldn't even say they care about money much, continue to cut hardware when they should be looking for other methods to spur on growth, persist with trying to make their 7 straight year loss tv division a success, amongst other things.
I think Sony cares about marketshare, market presence and mindshare most of all. That's what their actions suggest anyhow.

Neh... Their business model just sucks like a californian hooker...
Depending on high market share on a premium product with small profit margins isn't the smartest thing to do.. That's like dangeling your balls above a fire..
