Forums - Sales Discussion - Can the Sony Vita resist the 3DS storm?

After an average start earlier this year, the 3DS is finally picking up.

His price drop has done well and finally the price is not an obstacle anymore. The games are finally coming.

Before the end of this year, massive hits like Mario 3DS and Mario Kart will be available. These games have the potential to sell 10 millions, and even more for Mario Kart. Monster Hunter 3 remake will also be released in Japan.

The year after, Animal Crossing (10+ millions seller on DS), Tomodachi (huge hit in Japan) and Kid Icarus will be released by Nintendo. Monster Hunter 4 has been announced as well. Other games will be launched next year, MGS3, Resident Evil revelations, Luigi Mansion 2 , Paper Mario, Mario tennis, Fire emblem.

When the Vita will be released worlwide, the gap will likely be over 10 millions. And the Vita will be more expensive and will have less system sellers than the 3DS who is ready to start really.

So do you think that Sony has a chance to weather the upcoming 3DS storm and to make it competitive?

After the TGS and Sonys announcements I think that Sonys Vita is in trouble, in really bad trouble. Not only on the games side, but the short battery life, high 3G costs and primarily the expensive Vita SD-Cards upset even PSP fans.

On the other side: The future of the 3DS seems bright now.

The 3DS still has an image problem - many people still see it as another iteration of the DS, and much of the market that the DS secured last gen believe that glasses-less 3D is harmful to eyes.

~~~~ Mario Kart 8 drove far past my expectations! Never again will I doubt the wheels of a Monster Franchise! :0 ~~~~
After E3 I thought that Vita had the advantage, but that was when they were the same price and I thought the Vita's battery life would be better than the 3DS. Now that I know the battery life is identical, the 3DS is cheaper and Nintendo are finally going to get their system sellers out soon I would expect that the vita is in a bit of trouble. I dont think the gap between the 3DS and Vita will be as large as the DS to PSP but we will have to see.
Like Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said “You Bet Against Nintendo At Your Peril”
Unless Sony actually brings a System Seller to the table, the Vita will struggle to compete with a 3DS with full steam. The holiday season will be a good demonstration of how much the 3DS can sell when two of it's main guns release: Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. And let's not forget that there's still isn't a main pokemon game for the 3DS.
Both will do well this holiday PSVita has one of best launch line up in videogame history so it will do well but 3DS will do better because of bigs systhemsellers.
PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m
Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m
No. Vita stands no chance against 3DS in any market in the current situation, partly because it lost two major franchises that are Monster Hunter and Hatsune Miku. I like Vita and I will buy it at launch, but probably without any games unless Gravity Daze is available from the start.
It will be interesting. If Pokemon, 2D Mario and Monster Hunter are all released on the 3DS in Japan before the Vita is released there it will almost certainly be doomed to second place in that market. The rest of the world I'm less certain about, but I'd certainly say 3DS is well and truly odds on to sell more in the long term.
Vita will however do very respectable numbers, at a guess falling ~10M short of PSP figures in the long run.
Vita is shaping up to be a great console.So I believe it has a good chance.
3DS survived a bad launch and several mistakes and managed to start thriving correcting what was wrong, so given Vita will have a better start, I wouldn't declare it d0med. But quite likely Vita will rank 2nd WW, Ninty owns the strongest exclusives. This time, though, Ninty made more errors than last gen and most probably Sony will make less, so Vita could reach a larger market share than PSP.
