Forums - Gaming Discussion - Editorial: 3DS vs. PS Vita - Will History Repeat Itself?

I don't think that the Vita will even get PSP sales numbers.

When Vita arrives the hardware power is outdated from even mid price smartphones. The PSP had some "cool" and high-end flair around them. Vita obviously don't have this advantage.

The 3DS has the biggest IPs (Pokemon, Mario, Layton, Zelda, Dr. Kawashimas and even Resident Evil, Metal Gear & Co). Games for all kinds of gamers.

I think there is no place for an new handheld between smartphones and 3DS in the future.

I don't why you talk about smartphone psvita is a handheld console ans smartphone are phones you think a person will buy angry bird instead of  uncharted a person will buy both if he interestes by this2 games.

It's not because smartphones have higher sale number then handheld, handheld will be affect.

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

When PSP arrived many young men bought it because it has the "cool" and high-end flair. Vita will not have this advantage, because when Vita arrives smartphones will be more powerful and show better graphics. So this big part of potential vita buyers fall flat.

In the end Vita will have probably have lower sales than the PSP has.

Can you give me a exemple of game in iphone that have better graphic then god of war ghost of sparta.

Even if they have some games that has better graphic then psp,psp game will look more impresive because psp is a 2004 hardware and iphone is 2007.

I thing we should wait 2 yeasr to match psvita power then it need 3-4 years to match psvita game graphic and psvita will have price advantage.

And smartphone gamers don't care about graphics they prefer the 1 dollars games.

so the PSvita will doing well and will have better sale then PSP if games are good and can outsell 3Ds is not sure but it's possible.

People treat psvita like a psp they say i don't want home console experience in a handheld and ignored the unique game they say i don't want uncharted but don't talk about gravity daze for exemple.

For 600 dollars  i could buy a smartphone without any game i can also buy a psvita with more then 60 minis game.So i prefer a psvita.

Why should I buy a $250 console to play a $40 full featured game when I can buy a $600 smartphone to play a $10 casual game?

Sadly that is the state of the handheld industry, but hey I am about to buy 600 smartphone! :P

Well as of now i refuse to get a 3DS cause of battery life. And their sales haven't been too stellar. It'll be interesting where they go from here. I'm pretty excited for the Vita though. And i plan on getting a 3DS if they ever improve the battery life.

Geez, can you guys shorten the quote walls? They're taking up half the page!

Agreed, there should be an auto cut quotes feature after 2-3 quotes.  This would help since most people don't take out the very first quotes....

OT:  I believe the handheld will probably end up near the same as previous generation.  Nintendo will probably have around 65-70% market share with Sony having around 30-35% market share.

Tagged for holiday reference.

It will be a tight battle--but it was a very close battle between DS and PSP until mid 2006. It's far too soon to call in the long term, especially given how little we know about the long-term software line ups for either system. Yes, the first 12 months of the battle are going to be tough but we all knew that, didn't we?

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo cut the 3DS price around the time or in advance of the Vita launch, too. The impact of Mario Kart at the end of the year can't be understated, either--it'll sell consoles not just at Christmas, but for months to come. However big Uncharted is, it won't have that kind of impact or long-term sales effect that Mario Kart will have, and Mario Kart will be followed by another long-term seller in Animal Crossing. Sony have enough content and compelling features to build up a good core base, but I don't see anything that suggests they can move beyond that. Nintendo on the other hand have Super Mario, Kid Icarus, Star Fox and Zelda that will sell anywhere from 3-7 million copies to boost the core base, with Mario Kart and Animal Crossing likely to do in excess of 10 million each, selling into a wider market, and that's before they bring a new "blue ocean" title to market. We may not have seen the next Brain Training yet, but that doesn't mean Nintendo aren't going to bring something like that along. And even if they don't, I still think Nintendo's first party line up is good enough to sell more systems than Sony in the long run. That being said, it will be a very close contest for the first year at least.
