Forums - Sales Discussion - Malstrom: Why Project Cafe will fail

Malstrom has the right idea. A lot of what he says strikes a chord with me. I grew up with the NES and Sega Genesis. So 2D Super Mario is more my preference and main reason why I loved the GBA was that it reminded me of the 8-bit/16-bit era. The Nintendo DS and to a lesser extent PSP are like that as well. And I find that in the last 2-3 years I've really embraced handheld gaming (DS/PSP and smartphone gaming as of late) and find it hard to have that motivation often to sit down on that couch, boot up my home consoles and play those. And it could be for the reasons he points out. Though for some strange reason I find lengthy RPGs (the type of games that Malstrom would call bloated adventure games) much more tolerable on portables than home consoles. It's easier for me to get addicted to and clock in tons of hours on Persona 3 Portable than it is to sit down in front of a PS2 or PS3 and play these huge behemoth games (It took me almost 4 weeks to beat FF13. I certaintly enjoyed FF13. But if there's a RPG I really like on a handheld, I'm going to favor that) I don't know why but that's just how it is. I've really embraced the portable gaming experience. Not the Nintendo 3DS though because the type of portable games I want to play right now are on the DS, PSP and my Android phone.

I actully agree the 'Project Cafe' is going to fail for the same reasons Nintendos' other consoles failed (excluding the Wii).... however i think Nintendo have learned from the past and they have a plan. i've read a rumour recently that claims Nintendo are planning to do 3D without glassess and without a 3D tv.

i dont know much about this tech, but i know that currently Sony and LG, etc are all focusing on sterostopic 3D, there are probabily other ways of doing 3D. maybe Nintendo have discovered a way of doing 3D on the cheap in which case they will corner the market again!

It's not possible, don't worry. If the rumours are true they refer to head tracking, not 3D (defined as sending a different image to each eye).

good lord why did I even click on that, I wish Malstrom would gtet a new hobby....

This basically sums up as :

"wah wah wah 8 bit was the best"

"wah wah wah Nintendo should only cater to the mass market"

"wah wah wah I'm a hipster and don't like when something caters to its intended audience"

That's why I didn't read it. I don't listen to analyst because they are wrong 1/2 the times. Most analyst thought the Wii would fail. How could it compete again the PS3 and XBox 360 juggernauts. lol!! Fast forward 4.5 years later and Wii is outselling both in hardware and software sales. Go figure.

Call Of Duty has actually sold more than Super Mario Bros 5.

Are you sure this is true?

Of course not. Combining all version of New Super Mario Bros. we have almost 50 millions, Black Ops didn't achieve even half of that.

Above: still the best game of the year.

I cannot fathom how a company cannot learn from their mistakes. It is like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

That's actually quite simple; most people don't learn a lesson unless they first pay a price for their mistake. Nintendo may repeat its errors, but as long as the competition makes the same ones, what need do they have to learn?

There is no guarantee to say that they will. I'm not a fan of Sony as a company, but I give them all the credit in the world for fighting tooth and nail to restore the PS3 back to some decency, and now it is leading in sales in the console market. The Xbox360 is older than the Wii but still manage to take a large chunk of its market with Kinect so simply.

After such royal screwups, it is hard to imagine Sony going down the same road, yet they might too. The NGP is getting too many PS3-lite games and has yet to show a killer app. Nintendo is STILL trying to force 3D with the the Super Mario 3DS coming up; unreasonably released before a 2D one which everyone wants.

He hit the nail on the head with the N64's complete lack on introductory games, same with the Gamecube. I cannot tell Nintendo how to run their company, I pretty much know nothing, but what I do know is you cannot force people to buy mediocre games they do not want. That includes a story heavy Metroid (outsold by an on-rails shooter :P),  a barebones Mario Paint (Wii Music), rehased and recycled content (Animal Crossing, worst Nintendo game of the entire generation), and unnecessary 'vision' sequels.

There was absolutely no need for a Super Mario Galaxy 2, but an NSMB2 would have been greatly appreciated. I grew up on Super Mario World. Last time I played it, I went on an 8 hour run and got the most genuinely enjoyable experience of gaming in ages. Wii Party and Wii Play 2 are half-hearted efforts to fill a need rather than create another. I credit Nintendo for fitness; that expanded their market by a huge margin, and Dancing has replaced music as the flavor of the month.

They can say all they want about making games for everyone, but even I feel left out by their 3DS efforts at the moment. The only game I am personally looking forward to is Star Fox 3DS. If I didn't play SF64 12 years ago, I would have nothing to look forward to. Star Fox was way more important than Metroid ever was. I'd much rather prefer a Custom Robo DS that captures multiplayer and slight customization over any Do-It-Yourself Wario game.

Nintendo paid the price for strict selfishness for 10 years (1996-2006). I hope they aren't hungry for a decade more.

Note: Why does Malstrom criticize 3D Zeldas when OOT was the best-selling one? Final Fantasy 7 had the benefit of an easy and quick introduction that nabbed it almost 10 million in sales, but that game was overall LONG and slightly difficult, so why did that sell? A large and unspoken part of Nintendo's failure after Super Nintendo was the complete lack of Squaresoft support.

Have to say, off-topic, Wii Party totally rules.

Why in the world would you combine sales of NSMB and NSMB Wii? Unless you are stoned, of course.

I havent posted in VGC much lately but.... I lol'ed.

I can't be wrong. Just this morning I read that NSMB Wii is just NSMB with added levels, powerups and characters. That defines a port. Therefore it is a port because I say it is.

I wouldn't give Roll attention, it is safer that way. He is Russian after all, and we can't thrust these guys.

Edit: I give up trying to make a joke about this.
