Forums - Sony Discussion - food for thoughts on xbox360 vs ps3...

so far, the xbox360 is way ahead of the ps3 in sales with 15.06M units sold world wide while the ps3 has sold 7.75M world wide.  it would seem that microsoft has this in the bag and sony has to play one hell of a catch up game.

one thing though, the first batch of xbox360 units are prone to the rrod problem. though microsoft claims that the units that are afflicted by this contributes to only 3-5% of total untis sold, there are reports that the actual contribution of these defective units could be as high as 30%.

now, the real question is, of the 15.06M units sold, how many of these units are actualy in the hands of unique individuals? many xbox360 owners have been forced to buy 2nd, 3rd etc units since thier units have broken down.  how many of the 15.06M units sold have actually been thrown out the window because it has broken down beyond repair?

if you think about it, the gap probably isnt really that big and the race is still much closer than many would admit.

 what do you all think?

I think everyone is living under a rock...

the X360 came out an entire year earlier than the ps3..

mM

well.. i don't know
but what i do know is that 2008 will be the year of the PS3 in Europe
Microsoft really needs to keep it's spot in the USA or the PS3 will walk buy..

So that means the massive lead in sales that the 360 has should just be.... ?

Jusitifing having roughly half as many units sold is something only you need to do Leo J.

I have friends who all have 2 or 3 360s each, though when they got the RRoD, they just sent it in to get it fixed. these guys are beyond obsessed with the Halo 3 multiplayer. and while I definitely think that the actual number of people who own a 360 is less than vgchartz says, I still think that it would be a decent amount higher than the PS3.

Well, its true, and that does explain why the 360's #s are almost 2x as high as the PS3's. The PS3 is doing about as well as the 360 did at that point of its life.

It is also true this months average for example the x360 has outsold the ps3.

While the gap in percentages may seem to be improving the gap in physical units sold is still growing. Anyway you look at it, "I think everyone is living under a rock..." is a joke statement. At least thats how I view it, but I do have some bias agianst leo j from other posts.

I have a question... how can the "gap in percentages" be decreasing while the "gap in physical units sold is still growing"? Wouldn't they have to be moving more units ww? otherwise the "gap in percentages" would be increasing as well.

Even at its current userbase, the 360 software sales are, shall we say, a bit more than just healthy. If, as you say, there are soooo many replacement systems being counted in sales that the "actual" userbase is that much smaller, than what does *that* say about the 360's attach rate?

I've heard the same arguments about the PS2, and you know what, it doesn't matter? Because you can't make that argument apply to the software sales, which are what they are.

Personally I think I should say welcome from GameFaqs, may your stay be brief and your posting sparse.

@ aceninja007

you clearly have no idea how percentages work.

if the 360 is twice as high in overall sales as the ps3, but they sell the same ammount for a single week, then the ps3 % will increase, while the 360 % decreases, even though they sold the same.
