Against the grain: Let's all have a HD Wii!

Yes, I'd buy a HD Wii 32 26.67%

No, my Wii is fine in SD 36 30.00%

No, but I'll only yet Wii2 if it's HD 29 24.17%

No, and I'll never get one, it's a toy 14 11.67%

Yes, but only if it was a... 9 7.50%

Total:120

As part of my ongoing quest to please Beuli2, I am going to be doing a regular series of threads called "against the grain", bringing up news stories which are either overlooked or too big to miss...

I'm afraid this'll be quite short today (boo! Darned revision...), but, I'd like to know just how much base there is for people to "upgrade" to a HDWii. Is it really that vital? I've been fine with my SD Wii for the best part of 4 years and have had no issues...I just don't see it boosting sales that much.

Not only this, but it would probably have hampered sales in the long run for the big N, due to higher production costs, would have meant a higher RRP, making the "blue ocean" penetration much harder.

Furthermore, how many of these "casuals" would really upgrade to HD? If the Wii has become the fastest selling home console EVER via HD and a low price point, I say leave it as it is.

Unsurpisingly, I'm going for option 2, but what about you? If you could give a qucik explanation why you voted for this option, to "gauge" peoples interests a bit better, that would be very helpful!

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I would have zero interest in a simplistic WiiHD 'upgrade', as I see little appeal in simply upscaling things or whatever. However, I would like to see HD implemented in whatever Nintendo's next home console is, because I don't think there is justification for launching an SD home console now, unlike there was in 2006, due to the lack of HDTV takeup back then.

This. However, whilst having HD in Nintendo's next home console would be desired (well, a must really) I wouldn't hold them against them if they just did a simple graphical overhaul (like, a big one)

As long as they don't add 3D computability...doesn't the PS3 do that?

It'd be pretty pointless to merely upgrade to a WiiHD as there's already a 1000 games out that won't support the HD and probably few new ones would either as too few people would have the HD model.

Unless it's a completely new system, in which case it'd have to be in HD as the vast majority of people now own HD TVs.   Doesn't have to push ultra realistics graphics though, just better graphics and 1080p, (and probably 3d).  The best thing about a new system would be that companies could port their PS3/360 games over.

Frankly, I'm more interested in how much the next Nintendo console improves on the Wii's motion controls than in how much it improves on the Wii's graphics.

Market wise, I think it's just too late.  A "Wii HD" mid-cycle upgrade (720p, more flash, DVD playback, Wiimote Plus, etc, etc) could've worked, but at this point Nintendo would be better off just waiting for it's successor (which is probably just 1-2 years off anyway).  Really, I think all we'll see for new Wii SKUs is new colors and hit software bundles, not an actual upgrade or redesign.

Kinda weird that the most successful home console this gen is the only one not getting a refresh.  Also, afaik, Wii's the only singular model of hardware so far that's likely to sell over 100m (GB, PS1, PS2 and DS all only did it by combining differing redesigns and upgrades).

After giving the Wii a chance, I just don't like Nintendo's games much anymore so I would stick to the two companies that have the first and and third party games I love.

a Wii HD would please the Nintendo fanboys, but the console would be crowded by old HD ports from the 360 and PS3 and wouldnt have much 'casual' appeal...

The lack of HD is becoming more noticable as we come towards the end of the generation.  The Wii wasn't top shelf tech when it released four years ago and now it's becoming more apparent.  That being said, I would not buy a simple HD upgrade.  At this point they should simply ride the wii out until their next console which they already said will be HD.

My prediction, Sony and MS will get in a cockfight over 3D as it's the upcoming tech in TVs just like HD was at the start of this gen.  Nintendo said they would not adopt HD until there is at least a 30% adoption rate(I think that was the number they stated).  At the start of the gen the rate was much lower then it is now, I know i didn't even have one until this year.  Now we have a small adoption rate for 3D and the big tech companies are going to push that while Nintendo's next console holds back on this added cost for the much more commonly used feature of HD.  Then the gen after that when 3D is highly adopted we'll see Nintendo adopt 3D.  I think their strategy is obvious and smart, let the big companies with lots of money push a technology while you use alternate means to capture the market, then benefit from cheaper manufacturing of the same technology later.

Given we don't have a HD TV in the house, never mind one in my room where the Wii is I have no need for a HD Wii.

Next gen consoles I won't have to consider it as they will all be able to output HD anyway, but if the next Nintendo console didn't it might affect my decision as I reckon in 5 years time i'll probably have a new TV. (hopefully in my own house)
