Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Against the grain: What Nintendo SHOULD have done/should do with the Wii

@conegamer  oh the WiiWare does have some alright looking stuff, but im a multiplat guy and I look at it like this, why would I spend my hard earned time and money on WiiWare when PSN games and service simply craps all over it. Scott Pilgrim alone IMHO blows away anything that came out on WiiWare this year. VC oh god im not impressed, its barely getting support. Where the PS1 classics get on average a game a week. and it doesnt rape you on price.  We cant even really blame everything on 3rd devs in this instance. Its not like Ninty puts alot of games on WiiWare or VC themselves either.

In this instance, perhaps there is a small difference. However, the Bit.Trip series, Cave Story and Super MEat boy (soon to be Fluidity) and IMHO Art Of Balance are all great WiiWare games released this year. I don't buy much for the PSN, but I regularly get stuff from Wii Shop!

Also, the VC has dried up, but there are well over 150 games for it, many of which are classics! It's the only way I (and many others) can get the original Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Sonic and Castelvania games nowadays...

Ninty is doing exactly the right thing now, actually making games and not some shovelware WiiWhatever crap, I dont care how much WiiSports has sold, its still a barely working game with no depth. Ninty is smart they are leaving the casuals before the casuals get bored and SONY and MS are only now getting on that. I think that in the beginning there R&D should have spent more time on getting the Wiimote to actualy be as accurate as possible and im not hating we all know the Wiimote is not accurate. the existence of motion proves that. Maybe 3rd parties could have been able to have more quality software to go with hardware that actually works. And WiiWare, god damn Ninty I know you dont really care for online and you have to much pride to be a "follower" but good lord the online is horrible. As much crap as the PSN gets at least Sony is steadily improving it. Its like Ninty isnt even trying to improve

That's insulting. It isn't shovelware and "WiiWhatever crap". Wii Sports is a great game and honestly, you shouldn't talk about casuals getting bored with the Wii. For the past 25 years now, Nintendo's been after the hardcore audience. What do they get? Continuously declining sales. If Nintendo hadn't gone the "casual" way, it would've left the home console business right now and the DS would have been destroyed by the PSP. We have historical proof that the hardcores aren't loyal at all (Nintendo till this gen, Sony with PS3...) and easily get bored of their hardware manufacturers. We have nothing that can actually prove to us that casuals don't stick to their manufacturers yet. In a worst case scenario, casuals can only be as bad and as easily bored as hardcores, almost certainly not worse.

Insulting is a bit far. Misinformed? Maybe

But, as I said, nintendo should keep the Wii going, at least 2 years after the Wii2 release with regiular, multiplat releases, as well as WiiWare, VC, 3rd Party etc. But, we'll have to see with the 3DS first!

Well, yeah, :P. I get a bit touchy when people criticize such an awesome game needlessly, xD. Besides, "shovelware" and "Wii whatevercrap" is insulting.

It is insulting. You just don't say it really! I don't think he meant "Wiiwahtevercrap" anyway in an informed decision, because that is wrong and needlessly uninformed. Insulting? No. Uninformed? Yes.

I think Nintendo screwd up really bad in 2008 and now again in 2010 by not releasing games until the end of the year. If Nintendo had released actual games through the year they could have surpassed 2009 in sales.

Above: still the best game of the year.

@immortal  thats your opinion, I found WiiSports to be complete crap I got bored after about a week, its only five games and the only game on their that im remotely interested in is buggy and inaccurate as hell. THe only reason I dont thrash it more often is because it came with the Wii. I feel for those who paid full price for it. that game is worth 20 bucks tops. 25 years??? In the NES, SNES era there was NO casuals, you either played games or you didnt and Ninty was dominatiing. Sony came on the scene and went after the young adult/teenage dynamic. THe ones who wanted to play more than just the next Mario game. Ninty messed up by trying to be "cool" Ninty is a family company thats what they should be doing and what they should always do. Leave that high tech crap to the Corporations that can make that and throw money around. lets get real you either play games or you dont. those soccer moms grandmas who bought Wii with one or two games. then dont touch it after a month are NOT gamers. THey dont care about the industry they just saw something that was new and looked cute and went for it. Its all good Ninty needed that to survive and now they are going back to the audience who actually appreciates there titles that are not labeled "Wii or Mario" as for loyalty, its not about that people are going to buy the system that they have the games they want to play. I dont support 360, not cause i love PS3 and hate MS, 360 just doesnt have the games i want to play and the ones I do want to play are already on PS3/PC

@conegamer  bit.trip is alright i wasnt that impressed, isnt that multiplat. Cave Story is fine but who's dumb idea was it to charge for a game that is free online???  I dont buy that dried up stuff. There are several different consoles on VC, if just ONE game was realeased every week on VC that would be 48 games a year. That is a fraction of the games released on NES ALONE. YOu can always find compilations or use emulators. I know its evil, but so are those prices. I'm really just bitter cause of the lack of N64 games, WTF Ninty???

Hey! I like that Wiiwahtevercrap! I played more than 25 hours alone in Wii Sports, and only haven't played it more because the best game ever came.

Above: still the best game of the year.

Nintendo already did a console that the industry could love and they ignored them: the GameCube. If HD was REALLY that an important issue then the xbox and the PS3 would have outsold them and that didn't happen.

Wii has proven that the game industry (journalists, 3d parties, analysts) are absurd and not as important as they want us to believe. Is ridiculous how after 5 years we still have these kind or arguments like if the wii "failed" or was a mistake when sales and customer behaviour proved the contrary.

I rarely read game reviews any more, stop listening to analysts and throw the towel with the 3d parties and they snobish attitudes. I was never a Nintendo fan, but in this hell hole named "game industry" is the only thing that reallt resemblence what GAMING is about...most of times.

It's a bit surprising that there are still bad news about the Wii. It's has been a "gimmick", "toy", and it seems to be "doomed" every year again. And still Nintendo is rocking in sales every year again.

So I agree with you cone. Wii will be fine next year, and doing great numbers this year and it has always been doing well in the past. And I doubt Nintendo would have sold many more millions if it had HD and better online. I mean, its' price would have been higher, which would have probably caused lower sales, and not higher ones. It's still doing better than the PS2, too, and that is really an achievement. Nintendo did everything right, but the press doesn't seem to realize it.

Now about Nintendo's next console: well, I could see Nintendo doing the same with the Wii2 as with the 3DS. They could pretty much aim more for the so called core gamers and have a great 3rd party support. At least that's what I hope for.

I'm glad to see you agree

I don't get it, as you say, why the wii is always "doomed". Where do they get this information from?
