Forums - General Discussion - Obama throws support behind controversial Islamic Center

johnsobas said:

so what are you saying?  That we should legislate sensitivity and intention?   Sorry but if you do that you're opening a whole bag of shit.  If they truly are making the mosque just to piss us off then i don't support the reason, but i completely support the freedom (as Obama said, he is supporting the freedom, you are making it out to be that he is just supporting muslims, he would do the same for any religion).  Muslims have to deal with people drawing Muhammad all over the place just for the purpose of pissing them off.  They can be against it but it is protected speech as it should be.   Putting a gay bar next to a mosque is insensitive but it is also protected for the exact same reasons.   Racist speech is insensitive but it is protected, these are all very important freedoms.

nobody draws "he that can't be drawn" for fear of death

This is equivalent to the US building a Japanese shrine dedicated to Emperor Hirohito at Pearl Harbor after the end of World War 2.

Shame on you Obama.

That is just about the most racist thing I have ever heard.

The bombing of Pearl Harbour was a decision made by the Japanese government in the 1940s. Emperor Hirohito represents Japan.

9/11 was orchestrated by extremists and terrorists who are despised by the vast majority of Muslims.

I don't agree with the building of this Islamic Centre, but only because it's a blatant move of political correctness, and I hate political correctness with a vengeance.

Moreover, this is some half-assed attempt to fix relations between the Islamic world and America, not any sign of genuine goodwill and feeling of equality, or he wouldn't be stressing the fact that it's two blocks away from Ground Zero.

It's moments like this in which I lose all sense of logic and really hope Obama is kicked out in two years.

Alright, if I rephrased it  to "This is equivalent to the US building a Japanese shrine at Pearl Harbor after the end of World War 2," then would I still get the same racism charge?

It is well known that Hirohito was on the same level of influence of Hitler and Mussolini. Like Hitler and Mussolini, Hirohito embodied the Japanese people just as Hitler embodied the Germans and Mussolini embodied the Italians during their reign of power.

Yes, what I have said can and has been construed as racist. Well, I apologize for invoking Hirohito's name. I am not racist and never mean my comments to be construed as such. However, with a topic as heated as this, I sometimes have emotional, knee-jerk reactions just like everyone else.

If anything, we should put the whole 9/11 memorial Mosque up for a vote through the families of those 3,000 who died on 9/11. I am willing to bet that it would be voted down by a margin of 3 to 1.

It's not racist

I respect him a lot for this as the entire controversy is increadibly stupid.

Anyone against this new mosque is a huge hypocrite (if american) and is severly denouncing the best ideals of our Constitution.

I'd be willing to bet that 99% of the people reading this aren't American, but just the European conquerers who decided to kick us REAL Americans in the ass and take our names. As a true American (as in my family's been here for 15000 years), I do not support this. Your people did nearly the same thing to mine, and we weren't exactly happy, and some of us still aren't over it.

Oh superchunk with the last word

guess what people can VOICE displeasure with blatant disrespect

So if you don't think we should voice our displeasure what does that make you?

Lets reverse it and see what it looks like (Note my opinion is probably extreme and i never wish for this to happen)

Christians build a church over the holocaust site, is it wrong?

Of course its not in America, but you get my point.

Plus Terrorist didn't destroy the WTC...

(My opinion)

Also i heard that the mosque isn't even on ground zero, but 2 blocks away. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Strange example, since the Nazis weren't actually Christian, but sure, that works.

And of course the mosque isn't on Ground Zero. The Memorial Centre is on Ground Zero.

According to THIS, He had Christian beliefs, but who cares about Hitler.

As long as you see my example, is all that matters.

If its not on ground zero, who cares? It seems like the Media is making the Muslim population out to be the bad guy. (IMO)

It's not so much the fact that it's two blocks away from Ground Zero that irks me. They can build it right next to Ground Zero, for all I care. It's the fact that they are deliberately placing it two blocks from Ground Zero, and even worse, that Obama actually comments on this and has the audacity to approve of it.

It seems to me as though the sole purpose of this move is to annoy people and shove individual rights in everyone's face. Obama is approving of it in a feeble attempt to make the Middle East like him.

Well if its not on top of ground zero, whats the big deal? How much space is enough?

Im gonna agree with the part that they are out to annoy people, but again its not that big of an issue, its just the media saying "The bad guys who blew up the tower, are going to be celebrating over the site where thousands of people died  at".

Any amount of space is fine, as long as they don't care about the distance, or at the very least don't talk about it. They can build their mosque wherever they want to, as long as they stop shoving it in everyone's face.

Its not like muslim's are leaving lots of voice mails on your phone saying "Hey Kantor did you hear we're buiding a mosquq in new york city", its the media that is out to try and make muslams the bad people.

Im tired of hear about this mosque just lilke everyone else is, and the fact is that the mosque is 2 blocks away from ground zero, and the media wont stop talking about how its  a disgrace to WTC families and blah blah blah.

That article was well written but I would not hold my breath waiting for them to show some tolerance

About time Obama grew some balls. I live in New York, and most of us believe that it's retarded that this is even an issue.

Love and tolerate.

so what?  nobody goes into the ghetto and screams the N word for fear of death either.  You can offend people, you just have to understand that people are gonna be pissed off and might do something to you.  They will be put in jail for violent action, your speech will not.  It is still legallly protected speech.  comedy central didn't have to censor it, that was their decision.
