how many nes sales after 90?

snes after 96?

how many gc after wii?

how many gba after ds?

they might keep the software support but that doesn't mean they'll keep making as many of the machines.  They can make the next machine backward compatable make some software to go with it still but focus on the next platfrom and thus might not sell as many an ps2

sony probably should have had a similar strategy with the ps3.  keep them all ps3sbackwards compatable keep making ps2 games but drop the ps2

You know that I can't answer the first two of those due to lack of info, and I won't answer the last two because I'm not trying to claim that Nintendo keeps a console going when the public don't want it.

However, I suspect that consumer interest for the Wii will remain high for a long time.

I'm sure interest will remain for a while I'm just thinking if the next console can do all the wii can do plus more at a still afordable price.  The consumer might very well move on to the next console

The main selling point of Ninty's systems is the 1st party support. If 3rd party support doesn't pick up and become like it was on PS2, i can't see the Wii having a life as long as the PS2 (or even NES, SNES, PSone).

Actually, I'd say GBA is probably the best recent touchstone for what to expect for post-successor Nintendo support.  It was the last popular Nintendo platform to get replaced, and had fairly excellent 1st party support (far better than it's 3rd party support too, which was similarly almost always lacking).

Nintendo published GBA games released after DS launch

  • bit generations Series (2006) skip / Q-Games
  • CalcoBit (2006) ParityBit
  • DK: King of Swing (2005) Paon
  • Donkey Kong Country 3 (2005) Rare
  • Dr. Mario & Puzzle League (2005) Nintendo / Intelligent Systems
  • Drill Dozer (2005) Game Freak
  • Dynasty Warriors Advance (2005) Koei
  • EyeShield 21: Devil Bats, Devil Days (2006) 8ing
  • Final Fantasy IV Advance (2005) Square Enix / TOSE Software
  • Final Fantasy V Advance (2006) Square Enix / TOSE Software
  • Final Fantasy VI Advance (2007) Square Enix / TOSE Software
  • Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (2005) Intelligent Systems
  • Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories (2005) Square Enix / Jupiter
  • Mario Party Advance (2005) Hudson
  • Mario Tennis: Power Tour (2005) Camelot Software Planning
  • Mother 3 (2006) Ape / Brownie Brown
  • Nonono Puzzle: CheChai Alien (2005) Creatures Inc.
  • Oriental Blue: Ao no Tengai (2006) Hudson / RED
  • Pokemon Emerald (2005) Pokemon Co. / Game Freak / Creatures Inc.
  • Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team (2006) Pokemon Co. / Chunsoft
  • Polarium Advance (2006) Mitchell Corp
  • Rhythm Tengoku (2006) Nintendo
  • Sennen Kaizou (2005) indieszero
  • Tales of Phantasia (2006) Namco Bandai / Namco Tales Studio
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (2005) Flagship / Capcom
  • The Tower SP (2006) Vivarium
  • Wario Ware Twisted! (2005) Nintendo / Intelligent Systems
  • Yoshi Touch & Go! (2005) Artoon

...I think Wii after Wii 2 (ie: fall 2011-ish and on) will probably be somewhat like this.  Lots of brand names, lots of collaborations and outsourced projects, lots of quirky niche experiments, maybe a 3DS multiplatform game or two and I think you can again expect to see Nintendo pick up some key 3rd party games for publishing themselves (like Dragon Quest X).  I see no real reason to assume that Nintendo will simply drop Wii software production immediately, that's never how they handle their successful platforms (NES, SNES, GBA)... this whole line of logic's backwards, if anything strong Nintendo support is exactly what ensures Wii will have a healthy wind down...

but how many game boy advances sold after they made the ds?  i thought the sales of the gba pretty much died after the the ds launch.

They sold about 22m GBAs after DS launch.  Not including iQue (China) figures which we've never gotten from Nintendo (though SCE includes SCEH hardware sales in their totals btw).  In 2007, GBA was selling competitively with PS3 according to NPD.

ok 22 mil is more than just died but depending on when the next nintendo console is launched a number similar to 22 mil might not be enough

i doubt people expect the wii to do what the ps2 did to the ps3 (outsell it for the first few years)

Sure, but Wii's also far, far more successful than GBA ever was, with far more room to lower it's pricepoint.  It's likely going to do more than 22m after Wii 2 launches.

I don't think it'll be as much as PS2 after PS3 (~44m and still going), but I do think it could be around PS1 after PS2 (~31m).  And by the time Wii 2 launches (end of 2011 to end of 2012), Wii could already be 110-125m.

no if nintendo releases a new console, and it's likely they are going to be one of the first.

I wouldn't be surprised if it never does. Sony and Microsoft are adopting their own motion-sensing mechanisms for game-play, and Wii is losing popularity due to so many low rated games. I own all three consoles: 24 games for PS3, 20 games for 360, 0 games for Wii. I simply use it to play my old Resident Evil games and LoZ: Ocarina of Time. My wife owns 3 games for the Wii that she occasionally plays, but most of her games are Game Cube. We were VERY excited to purchase the Wii, but just haven't had much pleasure with it. From what I've seen, most people are experiencing the same thing. My niece was having more fun with my PSP than she was with the Wii.
Lastly, I predict that a very large portion of the Wii owners are not even avid gamers. For example, my wife's parents enjoy playing the Wii, as does my mother, my uncle, my older sister, etc. My best friends, however, who are hard-corp. gamers, play the PS3 and Xbox 360. Families are beginning to purchase PS3 for the Blu-ray, and with the Motion Controller they can get the same abilities as the Wii. Many will also go to Xbox 360 because of project Natal. Eventually Wii sales will slow down greatly and just consist of the TRUE Nintendo fans, which based on Game Cube and Nintendo 64 sales, is a much smaller number.

Ugh. I'm getting tired of posting these figures, but well...

72% of Wii owners own or owned a PS2
42% of 360 owners also own a Wii
42% of PS3 owners also own a Wii
Wii was the 2nd most played console per hour in Feb 2010. In Jan 2010 it was 1st.

We are doing wishful thinking, do we ?

Huh? I can't tell if you're agreeing or disagreeing.

This is one of the few cases where the majority will be right.

Looking forward to: FF Versus XIII / LBP2 / The Last Guardian / Yakuza 4 / ICO Collection

I don't think it will, never have and still don't. To assume blindly that it'll have three or more 20 million + selling years is very naive and all I see in this thread is assumptions that need several years to proven wrong or correct.
No consoles are immune to declining sales and selling at a a fast pace does not automatically equal selling for a long time, anyone with a tad of insight into markets of any kind could tell you as much.

So, let me get this straight; anyone who votes "never" are delusional fanboys who are only acting upon silly wishful thinking? What a mature standpoint from some of you. Even the mighty DS is taking a plunge (yes, a plunge, 20% + down yoy this years so far). There is, at this point, nothing delusional, or even unrealistic, about claiming that the Wii probably won't outsell the PS2, it appears more and more likely as it fails to attain the somewhat lofty hardware sales predictions in here time and time again, I missed my own 2009 prediction by around 6-7 million units (overshot it, that is) and I was being on the moderate side of things.
